I see it as a process of refinement. Getting a razor sharp is pretty easy, but getting it to be “comfortable” is a real challenge because there are different definitions of what “comfortable” means.
In September, I stumbled across a way for me to get very comfortable and sharp edges reliably with a variety of finishing stones. I passed this on to another professional sharpener and he has seen the same results. But I think there’s a lot to learn. I like ultra sharp edges because they suit my shaving style. Some people prefer edges that are less sharp but somehow still produce comfortable BBS shaves. I really don’t know how to do that “on demand” and repeatably. So from my perspective there’s still a lot to learn.
