Décadi 30 Nivôse an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Crible

It has finally happened: my clumsiness manifested during the shave, and I dropped a straight into the sink. The kamisori is symmetrical no more, and upon inspection and stropping, the whole blade is warped to one side, more at the toe than at the heel, and the toe bites into the stropping leather. Positive side: I didn’t try to catch it, and no one was hurt.

I will certainly need to rehone this before using it again, but I’m not sure that it will ever be the same. Shit happens! (But maybe that’s a sign that I should go back to DEs and GEMs.)

    Have a good day!

I’ve done this. I dropped a straight razor onto a tile floor. Luckily, it was a Gold Dollar and not a River Razor. Can you send me some photos?

I suckin taking photos, but this illustrates the problem:

Before, this was 100% symmetrical. There are no chips in the blade.

I can’t tell much from the photo. What does it look like if you lay each side on a flat surface?

              Here we go:

Still difficult to see, but on the first, the toe clearly doesn’t touch the stone. There is some space between the center and the store on the second.

It looks to me as if it is cupped. In the first picture, the heel and toe are off the table and in the second the center is off. I’ve received razors with a similar amount of warp. By rolling the razor on the stone, you can generally get to the edge everywhere. You have to be diligent about it, though. If you use your vice, apply pressure very slowly and let the deformation you apply to the razor set in the vice for a few minutes before you remove pressure. I doubt that it would hurt to heat the blade up a bit but this is @djundjila’s domain more than mine.

As to heating up, what temps are we talking about as to not interfere with the tempering?

Sorry to hear about your blade!

I wonder whether you could find someone to reset the blade angle without ruining the steel. Maybe a “honemeister” would have some tricks up their sleeve?

Oof, sorry to hear about the Kamisori’s demise. Good that you didn’t try and catch it. I’m worried I’ll reflexively try to when I inevitably drop one.

Pressing F to pay respects for your kamisori. I personally think razors should survive a fall into the sink (it’s a different thing with the tile floor), but then again what do I know about straights. Maybe a nice KAI or Feather AC shavette could be a good replacement if its really beyond saving? Mine (KAI Cap J-7) has survived some nasty falls without a single bend.

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Wonderful Sunday shave. I love the scent of Cherie Tobacco. This was my second shave with an Escher edge on this Puma. It was as comfortable as the first one and lacked nothing in closeness. I thought the edge on my first shave could have been be sharper, but I did not have that feeling this time.

      Beautiful picture.

Did you ever find out the story behind the spelling of “cherie tobacco”?

        Thank you!

Not yet. Does the name seem odd to you? It definitely bothers me, but the scent makes up for it.

edit: I just reached out to Shannon (owner of Elysian).

Shannon responded to my email. She said that this was the first product for her company and she was attempting to be “cheeky” with the naming; relating both “cherry” and “beloved” through the word “Cherie” [sic]. I have said that the scent is like a sweet cherry pipe tobacco, and she told me that she attempted to capture the scent of the tobacco her grandfather used in his pipe when she made the fragrance.

    Gemütlich! Sun 19 Jan 2025

    • Brush: Zenith 506B MB (27 mm × 51 mm Manchurian badger)
    • Razor: Thiers Issard 14 Médaille d’Or 1921 Exposition d’Algier Acier Spécial (7/8", extra hollow, square point, carbon steel)
    • Lather: Chiseled Face – Gemütlichkeit
    • Post Shave: Chiseled Face – Gemütlichkeit
    • Fragrance: Tom Ford – Tobacco Vanille

I haven’t used the Chiseled Face base in forever and forgot how quickly it lathers. Gemütlichkeit is total gourmand overload and I love it for this lazy Sunday morning shave. I had been considering getting this set for a long time and I’m glad I finally did. The only bad surprise is the menthol in the splash (not anybody’s fault but mine, it’s right there in the ingredients list). I dislike menthol or synthetic cooling agents in warm scents, it feels jarring to me. So I’m not sure I’m going to use that splash again, but the soap is a winner. Not for everyday use, but for indulging extra-gemütlich winter weekend morning shaves like this one.

The lather was a bit fluffy, but still slick enough for a close and gemütlich lazy Sunday morning shave with the big Thiers Issard.

    • Brush: Zenith/Stirling - 510SE-XL 31mm boar
    • Razor: Chiseled Face - Titanium Legacy Razor
    • Blade: Bolzano - Superinox (2)
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber
    • Post Shave: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber Aftershave splash
    • Post Shave: Ginger’s Garden - Unscented Aftershave balm (+ menthol)
    • Fragrance: Stirling - Oro Valley EdT

I’m trying to use this soap regularly to potentially kill a tub within the next few months.

I love the scent of GTB, but I’m not sure I’ll replace the tub when it’s gone. For a barbershop scent, I think I currently prefer ZM’s The Master.

Legacy + Bolzano was a great combo as always.

There’s a part of me that wants to buckle down and focus on the kill.

Then the next morning comes and I get distracted by the other soaps I want to use. I should just hide everything else from myself or something.

An old Personna razor with an old Personna blade. Magical.

I’ll probably make a standalone announcement post at some point (maybe) but you might notice some slight changes to https://gem.wetshaving.social/ if you’re a normal user of that interface (Alexandrite). There was an update with some small changes. I changed a couple of new settings, but I have no idea if it changes those settings for the whole server, or just for me.

The color is slightly darker now. I moved the “hue” slider to make it a bit more purply, closer to what it was before. Nice improvement, I’d say. Personal preference, of course.

There’s an option to open posts entirely when you click them, instead of opening in an “overlay”. I enabled this as it’s my personal preference. If it happens to change that setting for everyone, and you aren’t a fan of that behavior, feel free to let me know and I’ll consider changing it back. Just keep in mind that I’m the HMFIC 'round here and there are no guarantees!

I also clicked a box which makes the left-hand side panel stay visible all the time. I’m not sure if I like it or not, but again, maybe let me know if you have strong opinions (if it even affects you).

    19.01.2025 - Creatures SOTN

    • Brush: AP Shave Co. Snakeskin handle w/ 26 mm Silksmoke Flattop Fan hybrid knot
    • Razor: RazoRock Cyber Medium
    • Blade: Rapira Platinum Lux
    • Lather: HAGS - Creatures of the Night (Mutton tallow base)
    • Post-Shave: Moon Soaps Old School “balm”

-> 2 passes on the head, one on the neck. Really smooth and slick shave! I feel like this mutton tallow base is really good.

Had a pretty busy weekend despite rarely leaving my flat (new furniture and so on), so I wanted to end it with a relaxing shave.

Creatures of the Night is yet another dupe scent by HAGS and it’s really sweet and powdery. Not my usual liking, but the base really saves it. This one gets really damn slick once it has enough water added and that rocks for head shaving. Unfortunately it’s a bit finicky to build a good lather, but I worked around that by loading for each pass individually. I was quite impressed how well the Cyber Medium handles longer growth on the head, absolutely no problem even though it’s a rather mild razor.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Let’s see what the new week brings…

Is HAGS still around? I’m not at all in their demographic, but ever since I stopped checking The Razor Company’s website (after they threatened to sue j33pguy) I haven’t seen it anywhere.

I think in such instances it’s good to check out the official site if there’s one and in this case, HAGS has one . Kinda interesting that it’s yet again just one guy, but I think that explains the AI tub art and dupe usage. He does a good amount of collabs/commission work for european wetshaving stores though and all bases are really solid. It’s just since he’s based in Greece, not many in the US know/care about him.

Out of the loop on that story about j33p though, sounds like a wild ride.

    Sunday, January 19, 2025: SLS

    • Brush: Summer Break Soaps “Elyria” - TurnNShave v9 28mm badger
    • Razor: RazoRock - Game Changer .68
    • Blade: Bolzano - Superinox (7)
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber
    • Post Shave: Chiseled Face - Ghost Town Barber Aftershave splash
    • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented Aftershave balm

Back for a second luxury shave this evening since I have to be up earlier than usual to catch a train.

The Bolzano blade still performed well on its seventh shave, but I don’t feel like I need to push it any further. I will probably order more of these blades eventually, they’ve performed consistently well for me across razors.
