  • Go to a speciality coffee shop to find out what good black coffee tastes like.

Even then, there is no single coffee flavor. The bean and roasting make a big impact, although the darker the roast, the more alike the coffee becomes. Dark roasts have the typical coffee flavor, while lighter roasts make the bean’s flavor more pronounced. They can go from very fruity to very chocolatey. I once had beans that smelled like blueberries!

Brewing method also impacts the flavor profile a lot. Espresso packs the most flavor in a single sip. Filter and immersion brewing mellow the flavors out a bit more. I tend to prefer that over espresso. Allows me to enjoy the coffee longer and gives a bit more ‘space’ to discover subtleties in the flavor profile.

  • I don’t think these are wood fire roasted, as I would expect you’d definitely taste that.

He was giving a workshop when I bought the beans, so I didn’t want to bother them too long. He did tell me briefly where his three roasting machines come from (one is a 100 years old!), so maybe one of them is wood fired? I’ll ask about it next time I’m grabbing some beans.

  • One you don’t wanna join ;) (Google). I’m still on the free tier of what’s now Workspace and intent to move, but I’m dreading the work that comes with it.

A year or so ago Google almost killed the free tier (look up gsuite legacy if you want to know more). Back then I prepared to move away and settled on Zoho as my replacement, but in the end Google responded to the community’s backlash and kept the free tier free for personal use (although there are some other restrictions put in place, so eventually a move is inevitable). Zoho might also give you the features you want.

I would not recommend running your own email server. Major email providers like gmail only accept email from servers that have all kinds of measures in place to make them as trustworthy as possible. That’s hard and probably not possible on a home internet connection.

Filtering incoming spam is also a pain in the ass.

It’s nice as an exercise to learn how email works, but I would not rely on it.

  • A DSLR doesn’t fit in your pocket… I’m really happy with my Pixel 6a camera. The night shot mode is really nice. Sure, I can get better shots with my mirrorless and a tripod, but I’m not gonna carry those with me all day (I hardly bring my mirrorless, let alone the tripod).

I haven’t explored other camera apps. I assume they haven’t implemented all the software magic that’s running on that Tensor chip?
