Been dreaming about building a (light) custom adventure bike. Rugged, capable and can get me most places. But also de-teched for reliability and field repairability. Steel or high quality aluminium, 2x drivetrain possibly friction, up to 2.5" (or 3") of rubber. 27.5/29 not settled on but why not both. Front and rear racks. And fully rigid. So we come to aesthetics. I really love the look of dual crown forks. Their “make way, coming through” looks. Oh yeahhh baby!
But so far my searches haven’t brought any proper fruit. A lot of DM forks, some shiny ones and tons of Chinese results. Nothing that says “choose me”. Could be that I would need to go deeper into custom. Real custom.
To continue my quest I seek guidance. If you know any source for rigid dual crown forks let me know. Storefront or custom maker doesn’t matter. EU results preferred.
Let me keep dreaming. Also at this point it is dreams, and in the dream there is no budget.
I think you might need to go custom on this one! Sadly no idea where would be able to design something like this though.
My only other idea would be a regular dual crown shock fork - but always kept locked out, but that is hardly lightweight
Have thought of accepting a suspension fork, it is an option. Especially if I could find one with around (or max) 100mm travel. But since Dual Crown forks are mostly used on DH rigs they come with 180-200mm travel.
Also I know as soon as we talk about light in the context of bikes it is almost always about weight. Meant rather minor custom.
The only rigid double-crown forks I’ve ever seen were on custom BMX cruisers that people built for show. No idea where to buy one that fits modern MTB wheels and brakes. I think @lemann@lemmy.one is right, you’re either going to have to go full custom or find a suspension fork and make it rigid.
I bet Ti Cycles (USA west coast) would do it for you, but it will be expensive. Aside from custom single-crown forks, they make some funky custom truss forks. A rigid double-crown fork seems totally within their capabilities.
Hallett is in the UK and advertises custom forks. I’m sure there are many other UK/EU suppliers, but Google seems to want to feed me US results so I’m having a hard time finding options.
Going to check out those links. But yeah, full custom fork may be needed if going rigid. I’ll dream on.
