I’ve been wanting to check out Mastodon and a good app helps me be more engaged. My issue is that there are lots of interesting apps so I don’t which one to pick! Which one do you like and why?
Android is preferred, but feel free to suggest iOS apps for others to use. Websites are also fine, but I’d like to install it as a PWA if possible.
I’m using Tusky, I switched to it some months ago from the official Mastodon app; but I don’t remember exactly the missing feature that forced me to switch ahahah
Anyway I am really liking Tusky, it looks modern, clean, fast and personally I did not find any relevant bugs in it.
I bet it is the same reason that I had: can’t follow or unfollow tags from official app (or atleast I haven’t found a way to do so, please help).
Ohhh other apps support that?
It was kind of the mastodon dealbreaker for me. No continuous feed based on tags or topics, hard to find people, and some buggy scrolling
Yup! Tusky for sure, don’t know about the other apps. The official app is great but missing many features still. Give Tusky a go if you decide to try Mastodon again!
Yup, I think you can do that on Tusky by clicking on the human avatar with the plus icon on the right corner of this picture (you can also silence topics with other buttons)
Tusky user here as well. I’ve been using it before there was an official app and it’s pretty great. Kinda miss their old logo though haha
@runswithjedi I use Fedilab on Android and it works great. Very happy with it.
I like Tusky. It just works, but it also has a nice feature that lets you open posts from whichever accounts you have set up with a couple of taps. In the official app you have to switch accounts and then find the post again, which is a pain. I have two Mastodon accounts so this feature is convenient to me.
Another Tusky user here. I like it a lot.
I also like Tusky for Mastodon because you can also use it to open up your Pixelfed account.
I wish it had support for Lemmy accounts, too!
Moshidon on Android
I use Fedilab, it is free on F-droid (google play version is like a donation) and it’s a really great app
Oh, I didn’t know that! That will give me an opportunity to try it out and buy it if I like it. Thanks!
Yeah, it is definitely an app worth giving a look
You’re welcome! :)
The official web client works very well as a PWA on mobile.
The official native apps are also an option, but are controversial for a number of reasons. I don’t use it, but from what I’ve heard Tusky is a very popular alternative.
I want to second using the website as a pwa. It works quite well.
Tusky is best for those who are newer to Mastodon. Visually it’s very clean, straightforward to use, and largely free of bugs (it helps to have been around for so many years).
For users more familiar with Mastodon, I’d go with Fedilab. Despite a few bugs, it’s the most customizable option, with so many features you can tweak to your own tastes.
I used to use tusky when I made my account way back and I remember that being good. After returning this year I decided to buy fedilab and it’s very good.
I find Moshidon and Fedilab to be the best on android and Mona and Trunks app on ios. On Linux I use Tuba and on Web I like multi column layout of Mastodeck.
I’ve been using Mona on iOS for a while now and I feel it’s the most feature filled app. It’s been great! Mona is also available for Mac!
Yes. The customisation possibilities of Mona are incredible. It’s my daily driver. I love the columned layout of Trunks app on iPad though.
I use the official Mastodon app. It’s pretty good, stable, and fast.
Fedilab is my choice to go
I do like Fedilab’s comment thread visualization, with multi-level indentation so you can easily see all the sub-threads within the replies.
How is this not the default I dont understand.
Fedilab does look interesting, but costs $2.50. That’s not a lot of money, but Tusky is free. Any reason to pick Fedilab over Tusky?
Fedilab is free through f-droid
Tusky for me as well. It works just fine imo.
Fedilab and Tusky are quite good - the so-called official app lacks functions.
Tusky on my Android.
Check out a Calckey instance (I think it’s a significantly better UX compared to Mastodon, and they federate) and their PWA. It’s pretty good. But there’s a list of native apps for it here: https://calckey.org/apps/
Interesting, I hadn’t heard of Calckey. Is Calckey the same thing as Mastodon?
In one of the Android app’s listing, I saw a screenshot for a mastodon.social post. Is Calckey and Mastodon kind of like KBin and Lemmy?
Yes, Calckey is to Mastodon as kbin is to Lemmy. Different pieces of website software that do similar things and cross-communicate.
Calckey is less popular, but is developing at a faster rate, and is much more open to community feedback.
