My son came into my life 4 years ago, and my daughter arrived 2 years after that. It’s been wonderful having them in my life, and I’m really happy!
But I left some things aside when they arrived, they take your life by storm and it’s difficult to focus on the things you used to do before them. One of these things is board games.
I used to play with friends like once a month, and built my collection around that group. Some games were meant to be played with my wife, and occasionally with her friends too.
Now I want to start playing again, and I’m thinking of two paths that may not be exclusive.
- Play with friends really late at night when my kids finally get a full night of uninterrupted sleep (not yet)
- Play with my kids. Haba games are well received here (my first orchid was a success), and these holidays we’re stacking up with like 4 more games (I really hope they like them).
So yeah, this is not much of a question but just wanted to share that I still like this hobby after 4 years, and hope to keep sharing it with friends and family 🙂

It’s great when the gamers are coming from inside the house!
Some of these might be a little old for the kids yet, but we had a bunch of fun with:
- Spooky stairs - it’s a dice rolling race, but eventually, every pawn is a white ghost and you have to keep track of yours. (Magnets keep the sheets on, it’s quite clever)
- my first castle panic - castle panic, for kids.
- CoraQuest (this you’ll want to wait a year or two) - think hero quest, but not legacy.
- Absolute zero jr - card based math game with addition and subtraction. (You want your hand to add up to zero)
- bugs in the kitchen - you roll a die to turn walls to guide the bug into your trap. The ‘bug’ is a nano bot, essentially a vibrating toothbrush head, that’s hard to control. It might be too small a part for the 2 year old, you know your kid best.
Edit: Mine is seven now, so we’re just getting into longer form games and they’ve been loving it. Attention span of about an hour, but we split up the games in half and revisit them when the wiggles attack. Some day: Spirit Island.
My nephews love Hammer Time, Echidna Shuffle and Labyrinth. They enjoyed them as young as 4 and still do (7&11) now
