They want their own children to be educated in private schools and by tutors not available to common people, and everyone else just educated enough to do their jobs and work for them.

Maybe a few scholarships especially targeted at a few poor “gifted” children, that produce false hope and additional shame if you can’t be “good” enough for one of those scholarships.

Genuinely, though, it is hard to gauge at times which actions are:

• Genuinely malicious plans to increase his and his cronies’ wealth
• Confused, because Elon or Trump were in a specific mood that particular day
• Some actor behind the scenes manipulating them by taking advantage of their impulsivity
• The genuine incompetence of the newly appointed loyalists (or the algorithms/AI they use) within the new deep state
• Genuinely ideologically motivated stupidity, from Libertarians that drank their own cool-aid within the administration.

It is genuine chaos. But overall, the effects are pretty disastrous, no matter what exactly causes which actions.

While this is very funny, and definitely representative of a sort of ignorance/arrogance commonly found in ideologues - I recently learned that most people talking about the effect have, in fact, been Dunning-Krugering themselves.

I can’t be certain in this case, but the usual suspects are not being connected to as many servers (e.g. not scraping some because of robots.txt settings), delays in scraping the stats, or excluding some servers consciously because their stats are deemed a bit suspicious.

Now, as much as I genuinely respect what their scientists have achieved with DeepSeek, especially with limited resources and import restrictions on hardware, and how it is Open Source and all - this will most likely end up enshittifying 90% of what it touches, still, just as “AI” like that does anywhere. “Good” to see those dynamics are the same on both sides of the Pacific (and Atlantic, actually), including overvalued stocks from hype.

Yeah, his videos and articles are usually insightful - but his thumbnails are often weirdly bad. For example: for the one about “Does Mozilla get USAID taxpayer money?” (Actually, not really), he unfortunately used the headlines of the article he was criticising, making it seem his video would argue the same point as the (false) article did.

Oof, that is really unfortunate behaviour there. I know moderating can be tough and sometimes emotionally charged, but this really seems like overstepping their boundaries to the detriment of the community. Especially considering I know how much work you have been and are doing for fediverse growth and content.

Also, might be interesting to crosspost this to !fediverselore@lemmy.ca - although the community there can sometimes flipflop from actually interesting and insightful to slightly toxic.

If you don’t have any money, maybe you can also help if you have a bit of extra space on your HDD - by mirroring some things (especially in the torrent form and seeding), it will at least be one more redundancy of some things in the worst case.

I understand concerns about fragmentation, but recently, I have been more and more in favour of “why not both” as an approach. Basically: One de-facto “central” community, and many local communities. Main reason being, that this will help the Fediverse grow without losing it’s “soul” so to speak. Where - hopefully eventually - there will be those central communities with a reddit-like experience for the topic, and then also local ones, where smaller communities around the topic, without the traps of large, “mainstream” communites, can form.

Basically: Resident enfranchisement. It’s weird, when people born in our country and having lived here their whole life can’t vote outside of local elections. My own father, for example, had a Dutch background, and was never allowed to vote in federal elections until his death. (Neither he nor I even spoke/speak a single phrase of Dutch)

Yes, things have gotten somewhat better and easier with applications for citizenship, but that there are hurdles like that to begin with, is a bit… weird.
