Good point. I don’t want to date trans people, but I wouldn’t want to use an app that purposely excluded them. I’d rather occasionally have to go “oh sorry thanks for telling me” than restrict my dating pool to bigots.

There isn’t much analogy with kosher practices. Do you know the explicit religious purpose of the hijab? It’s to maintain one’s modesty so as not to tempt men. Fuck that. Men are responsible for their own behavior. The religious purpose of the hijab is straightforward victim-blaming sexism. I won’t support a conservative, backward, oppressive practice just because it’s done by a member of a persecuted religious minority. That’s not white supremacism, that’s a basic commitment to progressive values.
I’m not saying we should ban it. In a free society people should be able to wear what they want. But we absolutely should not support it either.
Yeah. Accept Muslims and support their rights. But fuck the hijab. No one should wear that sexist trash.
To be clear, the vast majority of academic philosophers (at least in the Anglophone world) find Freud to be useless pseudoscience. Freud gets taken seriously in literary analysis and continental philosophy. The latter is a minority position (although drawing a hard and fast line between “analytic” and “continental” philosophy is pretty difficult these days).
When I was getting my PhD in philosophy, I would have been laughed out of the room if I wrote a term paper that used Freud in any significant way.
This sounds like a great idea to pass right before we elect a guy who’s promised to be a dictator.
I dunno, lil onion, we’re not off to a great start.
It’s not ethically okay to ignore it, but you’re also not morally obligated to solve it, only to do your part!
Defining mental illness is tricky. Typically one important feature of mental illness is personal distress. Given that lots of trans people seem to be distressed about their gender identity, or the sex of their bodies, I don’t see why it’s incorrect to call that distress mental illness. It seems like the problem here is the stigmatization of mental illness in general. Even if being trans was a symptom of mental illness, this doesn’t mean the best way to treat someone who’s trans isn’t gender affirming-care.
I have some bad news to tell you about capitalism
You can soften “a black” or “a Chinese” entirely by adding “person” to the end of it. English is weird.
Yeah and the yelling and cajoling is generally part of the process. It’s often a raucous affair.
Seattle is a leftist town, despite all the big corpos that employ a lot of us. And Washington is a fairly social democratic state, for somewhere in America, at least. It’s pretty nice.
Water in the microwave. Cheap Lipton tea bag for five mins. A little cashew milk. It’s fine.
Got a divorce and lost my job. Spent six months eating 1500 calories a day, 600 of which were liquor, and walking five to seven miles a day. Hours of walking by the Sound in the rain every day. Felt like the only thing I could control was what I ate and how much I walked. Lost thirty pounds. I got a few compliments on how much thinner I looked. Didn’t tell anyone that every pound was burned with hate.
I’m doing better now.
I used to hear this…back when I was in my 20s 😭
I realize you’re probably talking about news articles but if you want to keep track of PDFs, nothing beats Zotero.
Simple: pirate adobe acrobat and ocr them yourself.
I still haven’t caught it. There are dozens of us! Dozens!
Here in Washington it’s hard to imagine waterfalls even being noteworthy. We’ve got way too many mountains and way too much precipitation. We’re lousy with waterfalls. The whole fuckin state is a goddamned waterfall.
Wish my wife had felt this way.
