  • Appreciate the comment. I agree voting in theory is a good idea but I think a majority of people use it as not intended and it’s creating a net negative experience for the social media that utilizes it. Too many people use downvoting to show dissatisfaction with an opinion instead of the intended this doesn’t add to the conversation. Dog piling is a major issue IMO, psychologically many see negative votes (or many downvotes) and are inclined to treat those comments or posts with more derogatory comments or oppose the commenter before even reading the full post or comment. That’s a very real general example of functionality that’s shutting down engagement and being contradictory to the intent of the social media system being used. For a specific example, browse all with the new filter on lemmy and look at how many posts get downvoted right out of the gate that are perfectly legitimate posts for the communities they’re posting in. The moving good content to the top of your feed intention of upvotes doesn’t really work well in the fediverse without algo based feeds and the top filter could easily switch to views and comments to get the desired results without all the downside of how it is now.

If this were a minor issue I wouldn’t be commenting and would support the standard just ignore votes spiel but it seems to be that most people cannot handle the current voting system so I still see no benefit to them in their current form. The fediverse is the perfect environment to iterate and innovate on a system that doesn’t work as intended.

I think upvoting and downvoting should be removed in its current form. There should be a way to report content that doesn’t contribute to conversations or is hateful and if you want to know how popular a post is go off of alternate engagement metrics like views/comment count.

I genuinely see no benefit to upvoting or downvoting if the above mechanisms are in place. Upvotes are something many folks get obsessed with and downvotes are too easy to spam, especially on a social network that consists of mostly anonymous users. This post is a good example - it’s adding to the conversation and trying to spur engagement with the community but at the time of me commenting it has -1 upvotes (via Voyager since it aggregates downvotes/upvotes). What is the point of these mechanisms - they should be left to Reddit and the fediverse should innovate in this area and make something better than what we already had.

If you wanna irrationally doom a burgeoning social media network with misguided ideals, that’s on you. Lemmy will never reach critical mass on part time unpaid devs. If you were really against your usage data being monetized you wouldn’t be using any social media as that’s a core part of how any major social network grows and thrives.

The devs are literally in this thread explaining why this contractually required language is in the app. There’s nothing “sneaky” going on, especially since the notification in OP’s post is so explicit. If you wanna share how you monetize an ad based experience without google or similar required language go right ahead.

  • Definitely worth watching. I haven’t read the manga or watched the anime but really liked the live action adaptation. The practical sets are glorious, it is able to successfully present a very absurdist world in a convincing manner, and the actors really seem invest and mesh well with their characters. The fights are also top notch if you’re into Japanese fight choreography.

  • People absolutely care about DC in general. Batman is still the literal worlds most popular superhero. Superman as a property is more iconic than anyone in the MCU across the entire world. People absolutely have an appetite for DC movies, WB just hasn’t put out the right content as far as a cinematic universe goes. The Batman was also a huge hit and that was very recent.

I assume you’re talking about malignant which didn’t perform well but has already become a cult classic… many notable horror enthusiasts cited that as their favorite movie of the year when it was released and it’s had an amazing streaming and rental run.

  • I watched both of those movies and can attest Blue Beetle was not good by movie standards. It was a fun superhero movie but lacked any real depth and largely did not capitalize on blue beetles powers. That’s lazy filmmaking to me and it didn’t really deserve to succeed.

I’m one of the few people who liked the flash movie but totally cede that it isn’t a traditionally good movie either. Especially if you can’t get past undercooked CGI or don’t have nostalgia for the character’s it uses.

In both of these cases, I don’t think the majority of people out there were recommending these in mass. I remember when the first Aquaman came out I had my 40-50 year old coworkers and even older family members bringing it up. I think if you can get that demographic interested you’re more likely to succeed. I could see Aquaman 2 driving similar hype with that crowd. Plus, it’s coming out in December which is usually a good time for these type of movies. I’ll eat crow if I this doesn’t happen but I think this one has more potential than any superhero movie released the past couple years.

  • IMO, the difference here is that this isn’t reliant on just the superhero crowd. People who loved James Wan and fast and furious movies showed up for Aquaman and I feel like they will again. The flash and blue beetle had way more of an uphill to climb being basically unknown outside of a cw show and the Snyder movies and there’s a big difference between what Ezra and Amber did. One went on a hugely publicized crime spree essentially and one got into a domestic incident that most people didn’t really care that much about outside of entertainment news spheres.

James Wan also has a lot more clout to throw around than Patty Jenkins. He also has a much better and proven track record.

I think this notion that people are checked out on DC or Marvel or superhero movies in general is very exaggerated. People will go to movies if they’re good and hear from their friends said movie was good. As long as the movie matches James Wan’s typical quality level I think this will not be a flop.
