That’s the usual typical Corporate bad faith answer to whenever a serious consequence that everyone could see coming but they kept ignoring finally happens.

There should be a legal requirement to call a targeted advertisement a targeted advertisement. Being allowed to call them “recommendations” only makes these assholes feel emboldened to push ads where people wouldn’t normally accept them. Microsoft is pulling that dirty trick as well.

I always thought they did that to widen their stance so they can dart in any direction quickly.

I was using Krita for almost everything anyway already. The only thing I still need Photoshop for is in the very rare times I need to add curved text to an image. And for that I have a Jack Sparrow edition of Photoshop that runs in a virtual machine that isn’t allowed to connect to the internet.

Corporations must generate growth to please their investors no matter what. If the CEO doesn’t do it the board members will replace him with someone who will.

Microsoft cannot significantly generate growth by increasing their user base by making a more attractive product anymore. They have maxed out their share of the market. So they must pursue other ways to generate “growth”, like data mining their customers to generate an additional source of income.

In this kind of situation you will see all sorts undesirable behaviors emerge from corporations like that, like lowering the quality of their products or cutting down on their workforce to “reduce cost” event though they are already turning a profit.

We will see this shit happen over and over again until we come up with a solution to this “infinite growth” problem.

I remember when it happened. Back then we were concerned about how Microsoft was pushing Internet Explorer as a browser on its platform. And then we just gave up on enforcing Antitrust laws let them do whatever they want along with the rest of big tech. Since then they’ve been doing so much worse than that.

You can blame lobbying for that.

Brazenly forcing anti-consumer features like this is an obvious sign of monopoly and abuse of their dominating position on the market. They should have been broken up a long time ago along with all the other big tech companies who have been pulling this sort of crap.

That’s too much work. Just buy $1000 worth of bitcoin in 2010 and sell it all at 50k, which means you can cash it in 2 years earlier and still make WAY more than you’ll ever be able to spend.

At that point you will be affecting the entire market though. So things might become unpredictable.

I was hesitant for a long while and ended up installing Linux Mint on an old SSD I had laying around this way there was no commitment.

Now I’m realizing I haven’t booted up my regular windows 10 drive ever since and am considering getting rid of it altogether.

On a side note I created a virtual machine on the Linux side that runs Windows 10 LTSC on it for a few other programs I sometimes need that would be very difficult or impossible to make work on Linux like Inventor, Office and Photoshop. It lives trapped in the box and isn’t allowed to connect to the internet. If I need to download something for it I download it on Linux and drag and drop it into the box. It’s like having a little pet Windows that you keep locked in a pen, so it works for you and only for you and it can’t escape to go into your house to spy on you and shit bloatware all over your carpet.

It really looks like someone tried to prop the price up by dumping a bunch of money into it and failed miserably.

I rinse mine under the faucet, take the blade out and wipe it by pinching it between my fingers and wiping perpendicularly and AWAY from the cutting edge while holding it under running water. If you’re not comfortable with touching the blade I’m sure an old toothbrush can do the same. Then I reassemble it, swirl it in a container of isopropyl alcohol, shake the excess off and set it to dry.

I have found that the last step with iso alcohol makes the blades last much longer. Probably because it helps prevent corrosion of the cutting edge.

I have a Lexmark black and white laser printer which I’ve used lightly for years (went through one and a half paper packs so far) and it’s still going strong with the original toner cassette. And when I’ll need to replace it I know there are third party cassettes available on the market for it which are substantially cheaper than OEM. I bought it to replace a Brother inkjet printer which was just an ink/money pit despite being a Brother. Inkjet is absolute crap no matter the brand. HP makes it even worse with a ton of assholeish DRM layered on top.

Ultimately there are two big things to avoid: inkjet and HP. Look up a laser printer and make sure that there is third party cassette support for it before you buy. Brother is apparently good in laser but don’t necessarily limit yourself to that brand.

My banking app is in the list and already has a number of reports against it reporting the same problem I have with it. Exploit protection compatibility mode was already enabled on my phone. The app just freezes upon startup ever since an update that rolled in later last year and as I said, this problem has already been reported by other users.

I switched to it a year ago and I like it. The biggest draw for me is it gives me back control and ownership over my phone. It gives you actual and thorough control over what apps can do on your phone including Google’s apps, which on other typical Android OS are being given all or most permissions with no ability for you to deny access to any of them.

To gain almost all the functionality of a regular Android OS you can install Google Play Services and run it sandboxed, which means it will only do what you allow it to do and access only what you will allow it to access, which for me is the bare minimum before things stop working too much for my tastes.

Besides Android auto for now, the only thing that won’t work for me on it is my banking app, probably because of all the security checks involved in it. But I just use the browser-based online service to do my banking operations instead.
