  • I’m in a very small town, we only have a bar. $100/mo for 500mb/s up and down, at least I actually get that though. Rarely is it less, but they also hooked us all up with fiber when they ran the fiber thru the center of the city. Price is also largely because they are literally the only internet provider unless you go with satellite – which I was considering but with the weather here…probably not ideal.

  • What makes you think it’s “just to read announcement”. The initial post didn’t even mention announcements, nor was it the purpose of the discord. Yet that’s all you can seem to hold on to. It’s already been stated there was miscommunication on one announcement and that was that.

Do you see the issue now or do you need help?

This doesn’t even make sense because it appears you didn’t even read the original discord post or even have an understanding about it.

    A) It’s not a requirement to join discord, and never was made to be.

    B) Discord is of itself a community communication platform for IM.

    C) Millions of people actively use discord, it’s a popular platform and easier then others like Matrix. If it was something I didn’t already use, I would’ve never joined.

Your message is filled with incorrect assumptions and it appears your unwilling to go find the answers that are even on the same page as these comments. It’s very surprising with the internet nowadays and people can’t even seem to find information that is right in front of them, yet they act like they already have the facts.

  • Why would I be active in the DC when its supposedly purpose was announcements about the site and whenever this site is down?

Could you please clarify your source, the discord post as OP mentioned doesn’t read that. Lemmy.world announced their Discord server. And if you looked around the main purpose isn’t focused around announcements. It seems there was miscommunication and it wasn’t posted to lemmy, mistakes happen.

“Why would you assume/expect people join in a DC server to interact?”

That is sort of the point of Discord as a instant message community platform.

    I joined the discord because:

    • The internal lemmy direct messages sucks.
    • I already use discord anyways.
    • It’s a great way to not spam unrelated comments. etc

    Why did you join?

  • Yeah, I figured I would need to go looking around and try to understand why you say “The population is benefitting”. Thank you for the link, I see the EU has made some attempts at transparency, but 15 minutes looking around still can’t find actual details on what exactly the expenses were on just by type of expense. Probably in there somewhere.

My original comment was in regards to yours “Facebook and Googke have had to pay ever ibcreasing fines”, and I was commenting primarily in regards to that part. And your follow up was formed in a question so I gave more context. Not trying to debate, it’s just crazy amounts of money, keeps happening and it’s like it’s turned into a new way of doing business that benefits government and companies.

Also, not part of the EU, so I’m largely focused on the US in particular. But I do appreciate the response and I’ll personally check it out more. Didn’t mean to come off as aggressively or combative kind of “debating” or otherwise just information seeking and I apologize if it did.

  • Yep, after finding out about Verizon locking bios I decided to never by direct from carrier again. Plus, these alternative OS options need support. I run GraphineOS, it was quick and easy, never had an issue.

But google probably has been working on making newer versions of android closed-sourced, especially for OEMS. I say probably because there isn’t any actual hardcore proof but imo the bios lock is just the start.

  • Basically the same here like I have 20GB at full speed and then slows down a lot. But at least Verizon requires a data plan with any smart phone. I’m only away from wifi maybe 4hrs a month, I only need call/text not data.

My understanding is call/text goes thru the internet now so they force the data plan.

  • We’re talking billions of dollars, where is that spent? I’m no expert on the topic but I’ve yet to see any significant improvement from the massive amount of money the states and federal government takes from these companies. I would consider giving it back to the users who had their privacy broken would be the right move, for justice, but I have not heard that ever happening on scales like this. Redbull did like $15 gift cards for their issues with “Redbull gives you wings”, but haven’t seen that with big tech…I really hope you can provide more information and enlighten me.

There have been many millions of dollar fines over the years and many communities, roadways and overall infrastructure can be improved - which our taxes are supposed to pay for.

  • Yeah, makes sense. Even if there was an option to buy the lifetime and download I would. But its a valid point it’d be too easy for people to share it then.

Thats why I think a licensing method would be best, like Threema has. You can download the app but can’t use it without a license key. Even still, it would be a lot of work.

Just disappointed I can’t support it, but its also my decision to not have the play store 🤷
