We used to have a thriving rail and trolley system in the US; in most major cities especially. The automakers destroyed it. When they were caught, they got a slap-on-the-wrist fine and the nation went with the automaker’s suggestion of building the highway system up.
So yes, there is a fundamental reason we can’t. It’s the auto makers and the politicians they own.

He is still drawing. Although retired, he recently got a tablet and has been experimenting with it, so he puts out new comics on his website every so often when the mood strikes him.

Yes, I know. I was referencing two different artists; one that did try to have their darker-skinned characters be that way even in black and white, vs one who didn’t because he was concerned about how the comic would read.
Yeah, Franklin from Peanuts tended to be a bit difficult to read facially sometimes because of the shading. Watterson once said that black and white shading could be tricky since the eye, being lazy, was drawn to empty white space.
So often in black and white comics they just forgo skin tones, especially in a more simplistic style like Larson’s. If you look at Watterson’s art, for example, his Sunday strips do show some darker kids, but in the daily black & whites they’re generally all drawn ‘white’.
Also keep in mind that Larson is white, and so him making fun of black people probably wouldn’t go over well.
When I was maybe 6 years old, I stepped on a ground wasp nest. For most of the rest of my childhood I had an intense phobia of flying bugs as a result. All flying bugs were out to get me, and any stinging insects were going to sting me for sure, never mind if they were halfway across the yard. The slightest sound of insect wings nearby was enough to send me into a panic.
Then, one day, I was outside and nearly bumped into a wasp I didn’t see. I yelped and jumped back—and the wasp jumped back too, like it was just as surprised and scared as I was, then flew away from me as fast as it could.
And I suddenly realized that maybe they were just as afraid of me as I was of them.
I won’t say my phobia disappeared overnight, but from that day forward it faded pretty quickly. Now I can be right next to bees and wasps and be fine with it.
What’s weird is I’d been told the whole ‘they’re more afraid of you than you are of them’ business before, but somehow seeing it like that made that statement real.
And North America. Mostly on the west coast of the US and BC, although they have cousins sometimes called ‘mountain laurel’ on the east coast of the US.
Confusingly, in some places on the east coast, they call mountain laurel ‘rhododendron’ as well.

The foxes are not native to Australia; they were introduced for fox hunting in the 1800s. That’s why the penguins are in such danger; they don’t have any evolved defense against the foxes.
There are other colonies of these penguins, although their numbers have been declining all over Australia and New Zealand for a while now. In some areas they’ve dropped 70%, in others the colonies have been completely lost.
So it’s good that they have one safe space to breed at least.
No. Gender is largely a social construct based on psychological, cultural, and behavioral mores, although given that there are differences in the brain between Trans and Cis people of the same biological sex, there does appear to be something of a biological component.
Biological sex is tied entirely to the genome, and may or may not match a person’s gender.
