We do know we created them. The AI people are currently freaking out about does a single thing, predict text. You can think of LLMs like a hyper advanced auto correct. The main thing that’s exciting is these produce text that looks as if a human wrote it. That’s all. They don’t have any memory, or any persistence whatsoever. That’s why we have to feed it a bunch of the previous text (context) in a “conversation” in order for it to work as convincingly as it does. It cannot and does not remember what you say

No idea why that’s so scary to you. The only permission that’s understandable to be concerned about would be external write perms and that will at worst delete a bunch of your shit, not snoop through any of it. Trackers are also super typical, you’ll have a really tough time using your phone while avoiding all of these.

Hell all the OSS apps I use have some sort of crash reporting and way the fuck more permissions than boost does. Dude wants to make money off Boost and I think he deserves it. Most devs do, most OSS folks just accept they’ll never make a cent from their labor or rely on donations.

Boost uses Googles ad thingy so you’ll have to go through the Google routes. Boost just displays them

Your phone likely has a way to limit the amount of time you can spend on an app. For me it’s under “Digital Wellbeing”. I’d rather point people towards that than have the dev get sidetracked on implimenting this.

I think your instance is screwy. Trying to look at it on web browser and it’s timing out for me. Boost just like with Reddit doesn’t host anything itself. On Lemmy you mostly talk to the instance you log into from what I understand so any timeouts or network issues are likely a problem with your instance.

As is boost. I’m not sure why you guys get so freaky about ads. You can just not use the client or hell pay a few bucks and not have them. People who are paid for their work tend to produce higher quality products. What’s the problem with a dude being paid for his labor?

Why do you even use a client. Just use the website dum dum don’t have to install an extra app for no reason then. Stupid right? That’d be because the user experience is better with the custom mobile clients.
