not my own comments, but i noticed more and more comments being downvoted for daring to say something controversial. i remember back before we had to have the “this is not a disagree button” hover text on reddit, now we don’t even have that

i must say though, as much as i prefer the look of light themes usually, i think dark themes are objectively^[1] better unless you’re in bright sunlight: images and video aren’t affected by themes, so dark themes put the focus on the media, whereas light themes can wash them out

the first paragraph gets converted into a title with the ugly formatting, but as long as the first paragraph is plaintext (or uses lemmy formatting) it looks fine

for some reason it doesn’t become a link like the !imaginarytrains@lemm.ee syntax does (although it does in most apps), but it does notify the recipient (the first syntax, including both @'s)

your particular instance (jlai.lu) has defederated from lemmynsfw (though oddly not pornlemmy.com); so you won’t see any communities, posts, or comments from their users

you can check the federated and defederated instances before you sign up by clicking the “instances” link at the bottom of the page, then scrolling all the way down to the “blocked” section

as to why you can’t sign into your lemmynsfw acct.: i don’t know. possibly because they’re running a patched backend? it may be worth a bug report

i don’t think that’s necessarily falling for it, it’s appreciating it for what it is. i personally don’t see the nothing as equivalent to oneplus^[1], but if it was the modern equivalent to the op1 or op3 i think it’d be worth getting. i have no brand loyalty to 1+ (i doubt i’ll ever buy another 1+ phone) but damn if the op1 wasn’t the best value for money phone i ever bought.

this is mostly about bluetooth, but some of it applies to usb-c + dongle:

i have a cheap pair of earphones in my pocket (which i’m prepared to lose). another by the door. a more expensive set of headphones upstairs. a speaker in the kitchen. and when i get in a friend’s car or go to their house, i can just plug my phone in and it works without the aggravation of having to pair to their speaker

tell me, oh “you can just buy a dongle” people, what am i supposed to do? buy one and accept that i’ll lose it all the time? buy 5 and keep one plugged into every 3.5mm i own and don’t own?

plus, y’know - takes slightly more battery, hassle to pair, can’t charge and use dongle, all the other obvious issues

filter overlays reduce contrast, and wash out colours darker than the filter colour - quick mock-up:

nah, i agree with you. win explorer with qttabbar, tortoisegit, and some tweaks from winaerotweaker

dolphin is pretty good though and it has some features that explorer doesn’t, like a terminal pane

to add to this, some things to know:

1. any syntax can be escaped by prepending it with a backslash (\). this won’t appear in the rendered message
2. you can also do a line break without a paragraph break by ending the line with a backslash
3. you don’t have to do the numbers. start each line of a numbered list with 1., and the numbers will be generated automatically
4. lemmy also supports footnotes^[1] - documentation here, although the “longnote” syntax doesn’t work
5. you can view the source of any comment/post by pressing the “more” button, then the button that looks like a page. thus you can see how somebody achieved any markup (only available when logged in, for some reason)
6. most of these are broken on at least some clients, particularly spoiler and footnotes

but …surely you could just do the same thing with the old design? artist’s rendition:
