  • This is a survey monument vs the original post being a control point. Survey monuments are established on a larger scale.

When you need to reference a known elevation or XY coordinate, there is a network of survey monuments with known coordinates, usually installed and documented by governments. You reference a known location’s elevation and north x west coordinates and then use instrumentation to determine angle changes to transfer the known elevation to a series of other locations.

When you section off property or build things, like roads or buildings, you use this network of points and triangulate paths off of them to the job site by calculating angles and distances. Since you have to maintain line of sight while traversing the distance, you add points you can use to pivot on and travel great distances. These points are called ‘control points’ or ‘benchmarks’.

The main post pic is a control point. Your picture is a survey monument.

  • That only really works if there are funds to pay for it. These firefighters are making $15 (per the article) for doing hot, labor-intensive work in dangerous environment and conditions. It’s hard to get recruitment numbers up for work like that without good pay. Bonuses can help, but it doesn’t sound like they are paying enough to attract the labor they need.

The article also says retention is hard and one of their biggest problems is the lack of ‘experienced’ firefighters. It’s definitely going to be tough to keep people coming back at pay rates that are less than what minimum wage would be if it had kept up with inflation.

  • False. Any good lounge should have you reclined and looking naturally towards the joint between the wall and ceiling. Having a tv that is at eye line while you are sitting vertically is not comfortable when you are lounging. You end up crooking your neck down.

It’s apples and oranges for how you prefer to lounge, but I hate TVs placed even with eye-level while I’m standing if I am in a legit lounge. I recognize that other people like to be more vertical while they sit, as I’ve had this argument with a close friend… but for me, the lounge is king.

  • I always thought it was a huge concern to let the insurance company have gps access to my phone because it gives them exact times when I am away from my home.

Insurance companies’ more nefarious employees or employee’s friends have an exact playbook for when it’s safe to break into your home, how much money you have(based on how many and the types of cars you have policies on), how many people could be at home (insured on policy), credit rating… etc. It’s not data that you couldn’t get with a bit of research and time, but having a searchable database full of customer info makes it easy to list out hundreds of targets with little effort.

  • People can’t seem to understand that it’s a tool in the early stages of development. If you are treating it as a source of truth, you are missing the point of it entirely. If it tells you something about a person, that is not to be trusted as fact.

Every bit of information you get from it should be researched and verified. It just gives you a good jumping off point and direction to look based on your prompting. You can drastically improve your results on any subject with good direction, especially something you don’t know a lot about and are starting out in your research. If you are asking it about specific facts you want it to regurgitate, you are going to get bad information.

If you are claiming damages from something you know gives false information, maybe you should learn how to use the tool before you get your feelings invested, so you can start using it more effectively in your own applications. If you want it to specifically say something that can grab a headline, you can make it do that, it’s just disingenuous and not actually benefiting the conversation, the technology, or the future.

They have a long way to go to solve AGI, but the benefits to society along the way outpace current tools. At maturity, it has the potential to change major socio-economic structures, but it never gets there if people want to treat it like it has intuition and is trying to hurt them as the technology starts getting stood up.
