tangential: I‘m using a oneplus 6 with postmarketOS but depending on your friend‘s it skills, it might not be ready for him yet.

So far its very usable but I suggest someone must want to swim against the current and do things differently. One could say a „pioneer“ type would be ideal for this.

The „you have to like people“ part took me nearly 20 years to figure out. I hate people in general with possible remedy for people who are nice. I‘m exceptional at managing people, I just dont vibe with them. This leads to absurd situations where everyone is happy, professionally but folks just hate my guts.

So, I now work alone and am happy with it. :)

I play minetest online and some folks I chat with, some I dont. Its a private server so peeps dont bother others.

Big chat servers like on discord bore me because its mostly just trashtalk. Either lemmy or matrix, both are fine.

I feel like „site admin“ is a bit misleading. Then again, lemmy doesnt have a proper distinction between local and site wide moderators afaik.

On the lemmy part I‘m partly with you. Lemmy itself is not the issue. It is what it does with postgres. I have multiple postgres instances, one for each service. The lemmy postgres is insane while the mastodon postgres is easy on the cpu.

quick fyi: rare cars seem like a pretty easy way to dox someone. Be careful of any data you share online.

I use „tasks“ for that. When i prepare to go grocery shopping I go to my fridge, open the completed „shopping“ tasks list and uncomplete what is empty. I then complete them again in the mall. Of course the list is hosted on my server.

You can also have a barcode scanner to automate the „done“ action. You could also put in a timer to automatically make things undone if they need regular buying.

In any case, using ai voice recognition for this is a massive waste of computing power for things that can be done by simple if else statements. Of course it is also a massive privacy invasion if you use big tech stuff for it.

i believe you. But its not only about installlation.

Although NC is great for the right usecase. If file storage is the usecase, NC is massive overkill.

Sadly, I‘m not a database expert, otherwise I would help. So donations are the only form I can help with at this point.

From other comments I read, the database seems to be the issue, not lemmy. Is uses postgres and that uses the resources. Lemmy itself is no problem.

Lemmy is heavier on the cpu than for example mastodon or matrix are but a lot less on the harddrive. Its insane. I use matrix the most, then lemmy, then mastodon. Still, mastodon sucks hdd like crazy, matrix as well. Only lemmy is easy on the hdd.

Of course I‘m running private instances. You can never know why public instances go bonkers. Maybe someone is abusing it for other things.

Anyway, lemmy does have some moderation tools but I agree. They need work. You have to know a lot about linux, databases and have to figure out a lot of stuff if you have problems with lemmy. Thats not okay.

But as always with foss. If you run a public instance, you should accept donations and if they dont cover the costs so you can pay someone to make a fork for you that has what you need, you might be doing something wrong.

I‘m running a public instance on two threads and I think 2 gb of ram. A private instance shared with other services on 6 threads and 8 gb of ram. Make of that what you want. :)

I would probably rent a vps which you could extend if needed but start small. With 2 threads and 4 gb of ram at least.

Anecdotal evidence: I run two instances, a private and a public one. Neither uses a lot of resources.

But I get the database thing. Its spiking every couple minutes and a lot every hour. It’s not a big deal if you have 2 threads at least but I can see how it doesnt work for everyone in every scenario.

I‘m glad alternatives exist and I‘m much more positive on AP alternatives than protocol exiles.

Obviously not. I said if a feature is so advanced that libreoffice doesnt have it yet, they can either help building it (by code or by reporting the missing feature or helping advance the discussion) or they can use additional software if such exists or they can pay someone to do it.
