  • I’m biased but just to play devil’s advocate: where is the limit?

Imagine everyone is on one half of the pitch except for three players: an attacker with the ball 40 meters from goal, the goalie who is 25 meters from goal, and another attacker who is right next to the goalkeeper, blocking the goalie’s path to the goal.

The attacker with the ball shoots the ball through the air into the empty goal, with not even a tiny chance the goalkeeper could ever make it. Is it offside?

I would argue it isn’t and I think almost no referee would say it’s offside simply because the goalkeeper didn’t stand a chance to get anywhere close to the ball.

This is an extreme case, but I feel like today Maignon also would never have gotten that ball.

It’s difficult because you can’t always know if a goalkeeper would have been able to reach the ball without any interference, but there’s gotta be some sort of line between true interference and irrelevant interference that would never change the outcome of what is about to happen.

I probably agree it’s offside. As a Dutch person I’m frustrated now, but if I were French I’d be annoyed if the goal had been allowed.

  • I understand most people here don’t care much about Henderson as a football player anymore and rather about his actions off the pitch, but as an Ajax fan this is big news.

The squad is a mess and at least on paper Henderson is perfect. Great addition to a very young and often invisible midfield as well as an experienced player who could be a terrific influence on a group lacking true leaders and role models.

Honestly though I don’t really know him and am just repeating what I’ve read. I realized the other day I have confused him with James Milner in the past.

I’m hoping Henderson will be a big success of course, looking forward to seeing him.

  • This is good news. Not because the super league is a food idea, but UEFA should definitely not have a monopoly on football in Europe.

UEFA has created a system that is inherently unfair and functions purely to make money. In practice it means that a group of extremely wealthy and popular clubs from big countries are made to play as many games as possible while UEFA and the owners of those clubs make obscene amounts of money. The super league is an idea by some clubs so keep even more money, but UEFA is essentially doing the same just with slightly more clubs.

For the vast majority of clubs, fans, and let’s not forget players, this system does not work. The problem is that UEFA and large clubs have a lot of power, influence and money.

Fuck UEFA so hard. I hope the whole organization can be replaced by something more equal and equitable. The super league isn’t the answer to the problems of modern football, but UEFA isn’t either.
