I wonder what a federated education marketplace could look like.

Some sort of (possibly locked) video hosting, maybe even Peertube, course discovery more like bookwyrm with lemmy style discussion forums? It’d be cool to have testing/assignment material like Blackboard built in too.

Additionally FB Marketplace killed Craigslist, at least in my area (also US). Nextdoor somewhat is a counter but that has its own problems.

I prefer scaled to active sort for that reason.

I agree though, more content and more content diversity would be great.

The small percentage that contribute content regularity in social media platforms instead of just consuming are great.

Even if you disagree with my assessment of Russia’s annexation, isn’t an international body ( that Russia itself has membership) working with your people, with guarantees for self rule and an end to the war better than status quo?

If you’ve supported Donbas independence, with wishes for greater ties to Russia instead of Europe, you still get that in this agreement. Donbas can still legitimately join Russia in a few decades, and still trade with them now.

I get that you’re making some weird comparison to Iraq and Afghanistan, but who besides the world itself would be the colonizer in my recommended arrangement? The world itself in my recommended United Nation governance followed by a local government chosen by their own legitimate referendums with international observers and gun free polls? Is that not better than Russia just claiming them with no say by the people (unless you believe the sham referendums under armed watch in a war zone as legitimate)?

If public transport mapping is your goal, it might make sense to try out the MapComplete Train Station https://mapcomplete.org/stations and Bus Routes https://mapcomplete.org/transit themes which give an easier, more focused, mapping interface. OpenStreetMap’s platform is the only real way to compete against Google and Apple and it’s why Microsoft even though it has Bing Maps, has licenced to them resources like satellite imagery for mapping. It’s awesome in bigger population areas but there’s still a lot to map in rural places outside the EU.

Review is harder. Right now the leading open platform afaik is Open Reviews (aka Mangrove Reviews) which has tie-ins to OSM projects like MapComplete. OsmAnd and OrganicMaps have open tickets to hook into that ecosystem. You’re right about the userbase problem though, I think it (or a successor) needs AP federation to really take off. That being said there’s several active non-Google nonfree alternatives like Yelp and TripAdvisor as well as niche sites for things like camping, parks, and schools.

I think masto and indie/fedi microblogging makes sense for seeing the empherial now that you are interested not topic based content. (Especially on small niche instances via the local feed) its a also great way to meet like minded people and build longer lasting connections as you see more of a person via their stream than only seeing them in niche spaces. Granted many people single topic their accounts, but masto is way more personal and less influencer type accounts than Twitter was, though those accounts exist too. You can still follow topics, but that’s a way of finding new people with shared interests not necessarily only deep diving in a topic.

Lemmy and topic forums in general are great at deep diving in a topic, but since you stay in the niche while you might see people frequent in that niche you really don’t have those longer interactions. Some forum communities try to mitigate this by having general chat posts or chat rooms on the side.

Different kinds of social media have their strengths.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/2959 got closed. From what I gather it seemed like too large of a task to tackle right now. They are recommending to use pinned posts with links to other posts if that gets too large as a workaround.
