Been running Windows 10 on my gaming desktop for a while now and refusing to “upgrade” to 11 because of how much worse it was. Going to be doing a hardware refresh in a couple months and when I do I’m installing Linux. Thanks to Valve and a few major open source projects Linux gaming has finally reached a point where I can tell MS to fuck off with their enshitification.
Of course I thought the same with JavaScript but was forced to learn it last year
Use TypeScript. It’s still built on a giant steaming pile of shit but at least if you’re careful most of your own code can be reasonably correct.

You can, most networks just decide not to. Broadcast TV (which hasn’t really existed for I think more than a decade now) had restrictions about swearing (and other content) enforced by the FCC as it used a public good (RF bands). Cable TV (and now streaming services) are and pretty much have always been unregulated.
TV Networks, being companies trying to make money, opt to self censor so as to appeal to the largest number of viewers, but that isn’t anything to do with the government, it’s 100% a business decision.
Very much this. I have never switched employers and not received a sizable salary bump in the process. This isn’t quite “don’t threaten me with a good time” territory, but it’s not far removed from it.

Yep and that’s fair, but it’s still really critical that those of us that can migrate do so. It’s a chicken and egg problem. Developers won’t feel pressured to support Linux if there’s no sizable user base, but the user base won’t grow until developers provide support for Linux. He even mentions that in that video. There’s a reason I’m only this year planning on switching my primary desktop from Windows to Linux and it’s because of how good Proton has gotten. I’ve already checked every game in my Steam library and while it’s not 100% of the library that runs, everything that doesn’t is something I don’t care about.

Nah, Linux still only accounts for about 2% of all users on Steam (active per month) so it has a long way to go still, but at least it’s heading in the right direction. If you count only English speaking Steam users that number climbs to over 5%. If Linux can get to and reliably maintain 10% that’s probably good enough to make it a first class target for even AAA releases, but it’s not there yet. The fact that so many games run fine under Linux these days is almost entirely down to the effort Valve has sunk into Proton making it relatively easy for devs to check Steamdeck support off without needing to really put much work in at all.
Going to guess his pain points are the fingerprint reader and possibly wifi/blutooth chipset. There are some of those supported but that’s still the spottiest in terms of driver support under Linux. Maybe also webcam but generally those work fine these days.
We don’t need everyone to migrate, just enough that companies and developers feel obligated to support Linux. We’re slowly getting there. Valve throwing their weight behind Linux for gaming was a massive win for Linux. Another important factor is the rise of the mobile first generations and the fact that at its core Android is Linux based. It’s not completely trivial to port an Android app to Linux but it’s at least no worse than porting it to Windows.
Microsoft may still have a stranglehold on corporate desktops, but they’ve long since lost the battle for servers and their hold on the home desktop is slipping a little more each day. Losing a significant chunk of gamers to Linux would be a massive blow to MS because it has been one of the few really unassailable markets for them historically.
I’m hoping to make the switch next month. Building out a new gaming system and going to try going all in on Linux again. Long ago I was a full time Linux user, but with the rise of Steam and the spotty support of wine I couldn’t justify staying with it. Now that Proton is good enough to cover 90%+ of my games library I’m returning to where I started.
I can confirm Samsung appliances are complete trash. Every single one I’ve owned has either died or had a non-replaceable part fail within a couple years. We had a Samsung fridge at one point and one of the door switches failed. No big deal right, easy to replace? No, apparently Samsung used some kind of custom switch instead of the bog standard cherry contact switch that basically everything and everyone has used for decades, and it’s no longer being manufactured.
Ultimately this is how renewables win. Not because people are pushing for them, but because they’re cheaper and easier. In order to reach that point we do need a certain number of early adopters that are using renewables because it’s the right thing, but we’ll eventually hit a tipping point where it costs you more to use non-renewables and the migration becomes self-sustaining at that point.
The implication of a 200 to 1 algorithm would be that the data they’re collecting is almost entirely noise. Specifically that 99.5% of all the data is noise. In theory if they had sufficient processing in the implant they could filter the data down before transmission thus reducing the bandwidth usage by 99.5%. It seems like it would be fairly trivial to prove that any such 200 to 1 compression algorithm would be indistinguishable in function from a noise filter on the raw data.

It’s not a question of blame it’s a question of working in your own self interest. Next election you have 3 choices basically. First you can make things dramatically worse by voting Trump and pushing us even closer to the fascist dictatorship we’re already edging towards. Second you could vote Biden which while not really improving anything at least buys 4 more years for the GOP to continue its slow death. Third you can abstain by either not voting or voting for anybody else which dramatically hurts Biden and helps Trump because those voting for Trump aren’t the ones abstaining. Sure maybe it will send a message to the DNC, although history seems to show it won’t, but in the meantime you’ve just helped Cheeto Mussolini come into power and if you’re someone who would be considered liberal there’s a decent chance that’s going to get you killed or at least persecuted in the near future.
In the early days of the internet that was actually the correct way to do things. Websites were supposed to be hosted at the www subdomain, while other content was supposed to go to places like ftp.whatever.com. Technically they should redirect thisstupidcompany.com to www.thisstupidcompany.com not the other way around. All that said though that concept has kind of fallen by the wayside as it became increasingly apparent that most hosts exist primarily to host websites with other uses as secondary so it became the norm to just assume the www when navigating to the root domain.
I suppose the other side of this would be realizing Trump is a complete moron and just about everyone in this thread has probably put more thought into this than he ever would. Based on that, Trump will likely do what he has always done and decide who to attack based on who most recently kissed his ass and who insulted him/made him look bad/failed to accomplish what he wanted/disagreed with him/makes a convenient scapegoat.
