  • There was a monastery adjacent to a property owned by Hugh Jackman. To help the poor village nearby, the monks would sell flowers at a stand near the road, at quite a reasonable price.

This upset the local florist, who was accustomed to overcharging his clients. On doing some research, the florist found that the monks were not legally allowed to sell anything from their property. He took his complaint to the village authorities, but they explained to him that the monks were actually using Mr. Jackman’s land for their flower stand.

They told the shop owner: only Hugh can prevent florist friars.

  • it takes a lot of trust for someone to come out

Even if it doesn’t mean anything to you personally, it might mean something to those close to you. Sharing these types of things is what helps build trust between people. It might also help them understand you better (improving communication, for example).

There are other possible benefits to those close to you as well. For anyone who isn’t as exposed or comfortable with the LGBTQ+, it might help normalize them to the queer community a bit (or at least be a step). It may also benefit the larger queer community just by your representation (and in my experience, it seems like the ace community is often underrepresented).

Of course, coming out exposes you to possible backlash and difficulty, so of course you’re not obligated to do so (or on any particular schedule). But hopefully that helps explain some of the possible benefits.

  • While I understand the author’s frustration with the developers not giving as much weight to the (non-contributing) community, the fact is that the developers get to make the final call on this, and they get to use whatever criteria they like.

And there’s no definitive answer to whether a name change would be a net positive or negative–a handful of complaints vs brand dilution is a subjective call. And for the number of users, I get the impression that it’s not as big of a deal to most people as it is to the author.
