Lance Armstrong wants to have a conversation about fairness in sports.
Some people think that’s a joke, considering Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France victories and banned for life from competitive cycling in 2012 after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency found he used performance-enhancing drugs throughout his career. Armstrong admitted to doping during a 2013 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The conversation Armstrong wants to have is concerning a hot topic in 2023 — transgender athletes competing against cisgender athletes. And he’s planning on discussing it on what he says will be a special series within his podcast, “The Forward.”
Here’s how Armstrong describes the project in a promotional video he shared on social media over the weekend:
“Here we are on the PCH, headed to Caitlyn Jenner’s house to have a conversation in and around trans in sports. I think, you know, with sensitive conversations and topics like this, people tend to, what it really comes down to, they’re really afraid to be fired, shamed or canceled. It turns out I’m not that afraid of that. I think it’s an important conversation. … And I also think the best way to have these conversations and get to a more, to get to a smarter conclusion or even have a smarter conversation is to go in fearless. And I’m sort of fearless on this one.”

In a tweet that contained the video, Armstrong wrote: “Have we really come to a time and place where spirited debate is not only frowned upon, but feared? Where people’s greatest concern is being fired, shamed or canceled? As someone all too familiar with this phenomenon, I feel I’m uniquely positioned to have these conversations.”
In subsequent tweets in the same thread, Armstrong did introduce the topic he plans to discuss, but seemed to focus more on his supposed unique willingness to have such conversations.
“Is there not a world in which one can be supportive of the transgender community and curious about the fairness of Trans athletes in sport yet not be labeled a transphobe or a bigot as we ask questions? Do we yet know the answers? And do we even want to know the answers?” Armstrong asked in one tweet.
“I do,” he answered in the next tweet.
A number of folks on social media have weighed in on whether someone with Armstrong’s history of cheating should be leading such a discussion. Armstrong responded to one of those people — political analyst Matthew Dowd, who seemed incredulous that the disgraced cyclist was “lecturing people about fairness in sports.”
Armstrong responded that he’s not lecturing but “bringing all sides to the table and inviting rational and open dialogue.” He also again asserted that it’s “a conversation that almost nobody dares touch.”
“If they stream podcasts up in your rarified air, check it out,” Armstrong told Dowd.
Excluding people based on sex at birth forces men into women’s sports and women into men’s sports.
For one, ones ability to express themselves through gender is just more natural than analyzing genomes and less awkward than genital groping to prove your sex.
Two, this wasn’t a 9-alarm fire till the start of the decade. Trans people and their involvement with sports have existed far longer than that. Plus if people wanted to give a damn about fairness in sports, there’s countless other discrepancies such as the (lack of) amount of funding and fanfare of women’s sports that basically are given to those typically driven by men’s sports. (Of which have no bearing of how well any athlete can do)
And three:
- Trans women are women
- Trans men are men And …
- Trans non-binary people exist that fall outside the groups above
This should be a society where in good faith, you can determine who you are. I would hate to live in a world where society tells you which box you belong in.

Since trans women don’t massively outperform other women in sports, and even the Olympics allows them to compete, it’s very difficult to have any remaining questions to ask and not have them come from a bigoted or ignorant source. But of course, best of luck.
But I think the funnier point is that it’s Armstrong talking about fairness with Jenner talking about being trans. And next we’ll be speaking to Uncle Tom about racism, and this old white guy about capitalism.

A guy that cheated throughout his entire career and bullied anyone who dared to even look at him wrong (Christophe Bassons, for example), talking to someone who is now more famous for killing a woman with her car & getting away with it, about fairness.
I love it when I don’t have to defend my community with rational arguments because other people are doing it already, urgh thank you gor existing fr. having to do it all the time gets tiring and it’s seriously good to stumble upon support in the wilderness
It’s a conversation no one touches because its settled in terms of 90% of sports leagues already. Transgender exclusion has become the norm largely due to conservative lobbying and uneducated people who think that excluding trans women specifically makes it fair. It’s laughable that he thinks saying trans people shouldn’t be allowed to play sports is going to land him in prison or something. If anything its going to give him a career in grifting that he can hang on to as he desperately slides into irrelevance.
Note the conversation is never about “fairness in sports” its always “should trans people be allowed to play sports”. They’re doing genital inspections of 8 year olds at soccer games for gods sake. They’re targeting cisgender girls for not being what they consider feminine enough and demanding to inspect their bodies. This was never about fairness in sports, it was always about transphobia and misogyny.
