  • I’ve looked at revolt and well, when I tried using it it was filled with less than reputable individuals. I don’t remember specifics but I remember noping the fuck off revolt real quick. If you want text chat, try matrix, if you want voice well, then idk what to say other than discord, team speak or guilded. Guilded is pretty cool, I actually like the client way better than discord but my friends all use discord and guilded isn’t a huge platform. It is backed by the Roblox company so you at least know it’s gonna be supported, but then again, it’s the Roblox company…

  • Because no one wants to learn something new like postgres, vendors haven’t adopted other databases platforms other than SQL, and licensing is absolutely stupid expensive for SQL, so most companies just stay on what they currently run. It costs money to hire new employees who know other databases types, and it costs money to train current employees, it’s just an absolutely stupid vicious cycle Microsoft has created. The barrier of entry for new versions of SQL is so high, that it’s just not worth the hassle and the price.

We’ve stuck with fire tablets forever, they can install the Google Play store and the kids tablets still receive updates a few years later. The newest ones have USB-C, headphone jack, good enough WiFi for us 2.4 and 5GHz, and can be picked up under $100. The 8" version is really good and they have a 10" version as well. I know fire os isn’t amazing and gets a ton of flack but it works for what it’s designed to do.

I’m still pissed I’m locked into pixel pass paying for my 6a and can’t unsubscribe from it without paying off the phone. I don’t want YouTube music or premium anymore or play pass, but I’m stuck until 2025 or the phone is paid off and Google discontinued pixel pass altogether so it’s not like I’m getting a new phone when that period is up…I really feel like there should’ve been lawsuits and fines for what they did with pixel pass. My point being, pixels are great, Google services are terrible, if you can get a Samsung get a Samsung.

  • I’m all for defederating, but only until we know what their intentions are. I’m more worried about Mastodon than Lemmy, but still, that’s not the point. The only power any of us have is to file an official complaint with the FTC and make a distinct point, not just “I hate meta/Facebook and want them to go away” it has to be a logical complaint such as “their terms of service are overstepping their boundaries and taking ownership of data on competing platforms that they do not own to lock out competitors.” It’s really the only thing anyone in the US can do.

I would hate for the fediverse to die by zuck the cuck’s hand, but the sad truth is open source is the enemy of corporate platforms, and it’s encouraging enough that ActivityPub is enough of a threat to Meta that they’re willing to go to these measures to make sure their bottom line isn’t harmed. The real fucked up thing is their intention to farm other platforms users with their consent and that’s the real problem.

Had an iphone11 and it was fine. I switched to a pixel 6a for multiple reasons though, mainly Google Fi. The iPhone would use data when it didn’t need to and I couldn’t control the data limits easily because the cellular settings would switch whenever the phone would get an update. I was hesitant but I’m glad I switched. Face id is the only thing I really miss.

  • Went from iPhone 11 to Pixel 6a. The only thing I miss is faceID, The fingerprint sensor works for the most part but it’s not perfect, face id was always accurate and worked every time. Performance is great, the os is smooth, I had a moto g power before the iPhone and it was garbage, the pixel 6a is night and day compared to that phone. I was a bit hesitant to move back to Android, I was pretty accustomed to iOS, but Android 13 is amazing and I’m hoping 14 is even better. I just wish I had waited a little bit longer and the 7a would’ve been available. The best part so far has been using it with Google Fi and pixel pass, I get guaranteed upgrades every 2 years to the latest phone, and it includes YouTube music and premium as well as play pass. Honestly the perks of the pixel and pixel pass have paid for themselves.

  • Thunder is very nice but it’s very slow to populate comments and posts to the point that it just skips through the comments. I’m trying to decide if I care about the whole sync data collection nonsense or if I want to use a FOSS app instead. I was also using Voyager and it was pretty good.

Edit: thunder doesn’t seem to be updating my subscriptions automatically for my secondary account so that’s a bummer. I was starting to slowly lean towards thunder as my primary app since it seems to be the smoothest UI experience outside of Sync. Voyager also has a really smooth UI, but it’s not a dedicated app. Liftoff is my default at the moment. It just works.
