For me? Recall. I’m ordering an SSD to dual boot Linux off of and ween myself off Windows as much as I can. Probably can’t remove it as long as I want to play games* with friends, but I’d be happy to have my day to day be less awful.
* Before anyone says Proton, Wine, etc, I mean the awful multiplayer rootkits like Valorant.
Oh god, you reminded me. I had a run in with this recently because my parents got new laptops. 1TB hard drive, should be plenty right? NO! My mom had 15GB of files in her home folders and One Drive was whining constantly to pay them for more space.
It was about an hour of debugging to keep the files safe, extract One Drive from the home folder locations because it had dug in like a virus, and then (after 20 online searches and scouring forums) click the specific toggle in the specific menu to disable One Drive so it would use local files.
I paid for a 1TB computer, why are you forcing me to use your shitty online-only limited-space shit show. Fucks sake.
It’s similar, but not the same. Most Linux distros require you to download a third-party program that people’ve never heard of. Windows gives you an all-in-one program from their official website, thus it’s easy to trust. Arguably Linux’s solution is better because you can use that program for multiple purposes. That and I think the trust factor is overblown as the distro will recommend the software and it’s not hard to find people vouching for it, so if you trust the distro you may as well trust the program.
Training users to click on this shit is the same reason people wipe their desktop by ignoring “Yes I know what I am doing” warnings.
They never argued that Apple would do that, it was clearly an example to display people’s double standards.
Unfortunately a lot of people think it’s to do with scraping as well. The amount of “defederate Threads so that they can’t scrape my data” posts I saw was about 50-50 with the sensible takes.

Have you seen a good method/guide to prioritise release groups for anime? I looked into it but it was super confusing to me and didn’t beat just grabbing a nyaa rss feed.
File format? mkv, so convenient. But media codec would be h265 any day. I find the video quality to file size to be perfect for most films and only have issues with it on the largest files and the lowest power hardware (Roku TV). For the movies I really love and rewatch I sometimes get h264 for the better visual quality. I tried some AV1 files and found the artifacts really ugly, but admittedly these were very small files. That and the lack of hardware decoding on most hardware is preventing me from migrating.
Well we all die eventually. I’m happy to serve a longer sentence and find out a bit later.
You’re right, that’s a very fair use case, and it would also boost the end-user appeal. I didn’t address it as I was fully in a user mindset.
Maybe it is overlooked, but is that unexpected when it seems to cater to such a specific niche? I’m struggling to see why I would use it. If I want to play my own music, I can just use my local setup that uses better apps and has my playlists already. If I want discovery, I can use last.fm, YouTube Music, and other venues. If I want to share music with other people, I start to see a point, but would rather direct people to use Soulseek or a different self-hosted solution that allows downloads. Speaking of, why is there no download link on the files? The website is sharing copyrighted content either way, what difference does it make whether it’s saved or streamed to my PC? At least with a download option I could see it as a Soulseek alternative.
And personally, it seems like a lot of effort to upload and reorganise my collection when I can’t trust the server and my effort to still be there a few years down the line. After all, storage costs money and who knows when the server host will get bored, run out of spare cash, or get taken down for hosting licensed music. This is before we get into the fact that even the shitty opus re-encodes I keep are over 60gb (the instance I found only supports 50). Of course you’ll tell me to host my own instance, but that is narrowing the niche once again as I would have to move my music to a server and learn how to host Funkwhale and would be opening myself up to legal problems.
Excuse my skepticism but I can only really see the use for either:
I loaded up a download page on a work computer recently, forgetting it didn’t have adblock. My god the amount of ads was insane. There were literally about 20 ads surrounding the content with varying styles and I could actually not figure out at a glance what was the main content. I don’t understand how anyone uses the internet raw anymore.
I don’t use invidious much, but this seems easy to use and friendly! Much better than the default from a new user perspective. My only complaint is please use a dropdown or radio select for the quality instead of a slider, using the slider input makes me feel dirty.

I’ve felt that the popular subreddits were on a decline ever since Reddit was featured in so many YouTube slop videos, but with time the effect of identity loss is becoming increasingly obvious. The crowd on there is not what it used to be. Gone is the desire for accurate information, meaningful comments, sources, and giving credit. Reddit is no longer a niche product but a mainstream one that my parents and “normie” friends know and it reflects in the lower quality content and user participation.
