Canary Islands. Great place, but the mass tourism is actually killing them, provoking skyrocketing rent and shortages of power and water.
Not “an”. Plural.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thích_Quảng_Đức
Thích Quảng Đức was a Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhist monk who died by self-immolation (…) protesting against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government of Ngô Đình Diệm, a staunch Roman Catholic. Photographs of his self-immolation circulated around the world, drawing attention to the policies of the Diệm government. John F. Kennedy said of one photograph, "No news picture in history has generated so much emotion around the world as that one.
Calling them brainwashed is disrespectul and ignorant of similar acts that, while they haven’t been enough to change policy, have invigorated social movements that sometimes resulted in the goals they were aiming for. The fact that you use “brainwashed” specifically almost makes me think that you can’t even understand how people could see the murders of tens of thousands of children as something worth taking radical action for.
That may easily be interpreted as: “Not only is this guy an asshole, he’s also SMUG about it!!!”
You’ll soon be in the top 5% if you have a keyboard app installed on your phone
…Those won’t go away, right? People aren’t going to start talking on the bus for their phones to auto-type the text messages they want to send through chat, right…?
I really only started to see the meaning of tankie start sliding once I got to Lemmy, and it goes in two directions; tankies who swear they aren’t tankies, they just have a lot of feelings about why the Uyghurs aren’t being mistreated, and liberals who literally think tankie is a synonym for leftist.
This was already happening in Reddit roughly 2 years ago.
“Communism” is always going to be authoritarian if by “communism” you mean a government that attempts to control the whole of society. If by “communism” you mean a society where private property (not personal property) is democratically managed, that has nothing to do with authoritarism. Nor with the Soviet Union, or China, for that matter.
The vast majority of criticism towards .ml and others come from them being tankies, not communists. I’m a communist, by which I mean I want society to overcome social classes and hierarchies, and therefore, defending authoritarian states with hierarchies where the people on top enjoy political and economic privilege is contrary to communism.
Already mentioned below, but for better visibility: !world@lemmy.world has better moderation.
AI and its consequences have been a disaster for Google.
Of course, they’re not really trying to protect God, they’re trying to protect their own fragile minds, which would have to do a lot of work the moment people are allowed to freely call them out in their bullshit.
Lmao that’s so shameless
You should trust that ads are going to be dishonest in one way or another. If you, personally, discuss your opinions and experiences of certain good and services with other people, you know that you may at least be honest, if you want to. And in doing so, you’re likely helping people make better choices with their money.
I needed some physiotherapy last year, and the first clinic I went to tried to handle me like I was a cog in an industrial complex: get done with him fast, don’t listen to his feedback, wait I forgot to ask what did his doctor diagnose but whatever we’ve only got 25 minutes. The therapists at the next clinic (one of them had to take medical leave, so I was assigned to a different one two weeks in) properly took their time to find every contracture, listened to me, offered longer sessions and was cheaper. Shittalking the first clinic and recommending the second one is only positive for everyone. Except for the asshole who runs the first one.
Humans are, sadly, wired to associate beauty with morality and talent, and reversely, to associate ugliness with immorality, and even though we have increasing proof of this bias, plenty of people would sooner judge complete strangers from the comfort of their PC chairs than engage in a little self-reflection. I consider myself slightly handsome, but I’ll still get shit until the end of my days because my mannerisms as an autistic person are considered alien. If it’s any consolation, finding friendship and love with these handicaps is not impossible, just harder.
“Ugly people have ugly personalities, if you disagree with me I’ll count that as an ugly personality”
What a ridiculous self-fulfilling prophecy. If someone disagreeing with you is enough for you to dislike them, I very much prefer to be “ugly” to you and for you to remain the fuck away.
Oh, shit, that’s right, make up is chemically corrosive to men’s skin, we can’t use it.
Yes, Ukraine had a dangerous drift towards exclutionary Ukrainian nationalism for many years, which Russia promoted by igniting the conflict through their use of paramilitary forces in Donetsk and Lugansk, which made it great for Ukrainian supremacists and Russian supremacists to fester in both sides.
Despite that, Ukraine elected Zelensky, a Russian speaking president who spoke both Ukrainian and Russian during his inaugural speech as symbolism that it was time for their country to reconcile itself with its minorities.
But this fact is usually omitted in Russian propaganda, since it’s so devastating to their narrative.
Look. Bitcoins might be useless at a societal level. But if we’re going to use excess renewable energy to drive out of business the crypto-miners who get their power from coal…
