The 32-year-old man was seriously injured in both the mauling and the shooting on the Kenai Peninsula on Saturday, Alaska State Troopers said.
The man was with a hunting companion who opened fire during the attack in a remote area near the Resurrection Pass trail.
However, it is not clear who fired the shot which struck the man as he tried to fight the bear off, Alaska State Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said.
The injured hunter, whose identity was not immediately released, was flown by helicopter to a hospital in the city of Anchorage.
It’s not clear who fired the shot
It was the bear!
decide to go kill some animals
animal gets you instead

Putting the “sport” into hunting.
Real hunting is hunting something that can hunt you back. Like a man
Tbf if they were hunting black/brown bear the meat is really good. Grizzly is a nope because most omnivore meat tastes nasty ('cept for lynx).
Black and brown bears are not the same. Grizzlies are brown bears. And no, I’m not just talking about the color.
Man tests “who’s safer in the woods, man or bear” hypothesis, gets null result.
We all know it was Dick Cheney out there hunting with him.
Where was the good bear with a gun?
Maybe that’s who shot the hunter in the leg?
His biggest worry while being mauled and then shot was probably the medical bill.
Bears are evolving - first he got him with bear arms, then tried to make sure with bear arms.
The bear was killed, Mr DeSpain said.
Oh, bummer.
“And then this hunter’s friend showed this bear of will, what true will really was.”
