It’s really about what you want to do with your computer. Try to do something you would normally do on Windows in Linux. If you’re already using an open source program to do it on Windows you will very likely find the same program on Linux.
If you want to play games they will likely not work well in a virtual environment.
Between WINE and proton most games work these days though… Sure if the game’s not on steam it might take a couple extra steps, but more often than not those extra steps are just adding it as a non steam game and assigning a proton version in properties in the GUI and it works
Yes, but that won’t work in a virtual environment that doesn’t have access to the GPU. OP said they were using Virtual Box to trial Linux.
