  • Computational-Fluid-Dynamics simulations are RAM-limited, iirc.

I’m presuming many AI models are, too, since some of them require stupendous amounts of RAM, which no non-server machine would have.

“diminishing returns” is what Intel’s “beloved” Celeron garbage was pushing.

When I ran Memtest86+ ( or the other version, don’t remember ), & saw how insanely slow RAM was, compared with L2 or L3 cache, & then discovered how incredible the machine-upgrade going from SATA to NVMe was…

Get the fastest NVMe & RAM you can: it puts your CPU where it should have been, all along, and that difference between a “normal” build vs an effective build is the misframing the whole industry has been establishing, for decades.

  • Wikipedia-titles often don’t give enough context for one to understand if it’s worth clicking-into.

I’ve got enough web-parasites trying to machiavellianly pry into my finite-mental-strength, … so it’s more likely for me to just ignore any post in this community which I can’t understand whether it’s worth digging-into,

& therefore am much more prone to not engaging, thanks to the “laconic” non-informativeness of the posts.

Others may have the same reaction…

Take a look at www.TVTropes.org & see how their titles pull people into their articles, & see the difference with this community’s posts…

Also, thank you for making this community: there are a few very interesting ones I’ve found only because of here.

  • Realistically, it’ll take 2 decades to hammer-out AI to the level that it’s truly-mission-trustworthy.

    Right now, everybody’s “high”.

It’s the same with all technologies…

Remember a few years ago, when somegody discovered you could power things with steam?

    Remember the hype?

The whole coal industry, remember that?

The business with the invention of the horseless carriages?

The invention of the wheel was before my time, but I’m sure it was hyped on Myspace or something, back in the day…

  • Power-consumption.

Also, the vibration produced by the 2.5" drives is less, but they’re more-sensitive to it, to begin with.

I’d not even consider spinning-platter drives, nowadays, though:

SATA SSD’s for a NAS strike me as being the sanest choice.

Samsung what are those called, Evo drives?

    excellently-high MTBF, ultra-short ( compared with rotating-platters ) seek-time ( literally orders-of-magnitude quicker ), etc.

I don’t know of ANY reason to go with spinning-platters, nowadays.

( & I’m saying that as a guy stupid-enough to have not realized this in time, & who spent money on such a thing, when SSD’s really were the answer )

To me it is the misframing of it that is the problem:

IF a person holds 2 bent wires, or a pair of sticks, or a y-shaped piece of willow, or whatever, & they walk around & to them it feels like something’s going through it when they’re over moving-water or moving-electricity ( I’ve a relative who tells me he can’t tell the difference between the 2, from the dowsing: they give him identical signal )…

THEN you can’t claim that it is some property-of-matter-divorced-from-their-unconscious-minds!!

THEY are the ones doing it: THEIR unconscious-minds are immersed in all they are doing.

If their unconscious-minds can somehow make accurate determinations, and communicate that determination through the “feelings” they feel when holding their dousing-rods … how is that pseudoscience?

Scientism’s falsely pretending to be Science bugs me.

The prejudice encoded in “matter cannot produce that result, & OF COURSE their minds have no validity, ESPECIALLY THEIR UNCONSCIOUS MINDS… so therefore NO kind of mind can possibly have any place in the scientific understanding of anything…”

    …prejudice isn’t Science.

IF a phenomena is produced by a mixture of mind & matter, especially a mixture of unconscious-mind & conscious-mind & matter,

THEN correct science has to study each of the dimensions of the system, correctly, & the way they’re interacting.

    Prejudice, however ideologically-“proper” or currently-fashionable, isn’t Science.

Anyways, I’ll never expect to see the “skeptics” do proper science, when their physicalist-existentialist ideology can “solve” everything much more conveniently, to them…

Ideology & prejudice are inseparable: they’re opposite sides of the same “coin”.

  • My experience is that USB storage sometimes breaks-connection for no discernable reason.

That if one REALLY wants to do USB storage, then put it inside the housing, and don’t use one of the external-connectors, use something you can permanently-fix, so nothing can even sneeze in its direction.

This mayn’t help you with your puzzle, but it’s bedrock and unchangeable, in my experience.

    USB-storage is an unreliable joke.

ANY revision of it, that I’ve tried.

  • I’m banned-for-life from there.

Russia invaded/desecrated/butchered Ukraina, & I remember what the vids showed of Mariupol ( sorry spelling ).

I made a comment on there to the effect that if Putin was the pusher of the war, then making things as politically-difficult for Putin in the election would be a Good Thing™.

( to me, the obvious implied-point is that it might have ended an immensely-wasting-of-life war that people other than Putin weren’t so interested in, and that, by definition, must therefore be a Good Thing™ )

Anybody who pushes Russia’s butchering of Ukraina as something which cannot be spoken-against, is fucking terrorist-at-heart.

Just my opinion, but there I’ve no right to such opinion.

    The beauty of this?

It perfectly demonstrates how segregation-of-ideologies allows positive-feedback-loops, which produces extremism.

Left, right, political, religious, moneyarchist, legalist, nationalist, sexist/genderist, ALL ideologies are self-amplifying.

    There’s a book on the US’s political-segregation ( “The Big Sort” ) & it looks like that mechanism, ideological-segregation, has only 1 outcome: butchery/war.

So, given the evidence, it looks like the whole world is going to be butchering everybody within a … decade or so.

Amplification, feedback-loop, polarization, and nothing is countering its controlling of the process of this world

    it’s got an outcome.

And if our world’s population won’t stop/prevent the “drunk driver” from force-crashing our “bus” with all our world’s peoples in it … well, then we get crashed/killed.

    The Great Filter.

WHEN one has cancer, THEN is it right to KILL that cancer??

WHEN one is newly-infected with rabies, THEN is it valid to prime one’s immune-system to as violently as possible defend one’s life against rabies?

Or should we just make-nice, live in making-believing, & hope that our hopium works??

What Russia’s been doing to Ukraina, what Hamas got Israel to be doing against the Palestinians & all the journalists…

do we let rabies overrun our world’s life?

Will the US allow rabies to overrun its life?

    ( yes, obviously.

    The others … likewise.

Therefore, Universe’s Natural Selection is looking to be … “pruning” our world from the worlds-in-Universe-with-civilized-life-on-them, this century … isn’t it? )

  • No: once a corporate-culture gets sufficiently divorced-from-reality, then they “have their heads up their asses” sooo far, that they commit blunders unless they “get a reality-check”.

    Committee-culture’s fungus-minded.

The problem is that the frame-of-reference is relative, so a corporate-culture which is still immersed in outer-customers’ reality is only one “degree” divorced-from-reality.

However, if the “frame-of-reference” of a culture is other sociopathic cultures, … then … then outright psychopathy becomes recommended/pushed/evolved, in order to compete among the misperceived-context ( which is only other-sociopathies ).

    So, it’s an escalating positive-feedback-loop.

Sociopathy breeds sociopathy, & when enough of the corporate-frame-of-reference is sociopathy, then psychopathy becomes primary, & eventually it is normal & ruling.

The increasing polarization in political-sphere, in religion/fundamentalism-sphere, in moneyarchy-sphere, in legalism’s increasingly shameless contempt-for & eradication-of moral/natural law, the increasing polarization of class-system/monarchy among those in-love with that, the bolder & bolder violent authoritarianism…

it’s all part of the SAME gorgon/hydra, just that each “serpent” is going in its own direction, but the fundamental change in human-unconscious is one of “fuck considered-reasoning: I’m going with ideology-enforcing!!”…

it’s less intellectually-taxing to be ideological/prejudiced “believer” than it is to remain loyal to considered-reasoning…

there’s less moral-anxiety within ideology/prejudice/belief than there is in considered-reasoning…

Overwork unplugs one from the push/pull cycle, the work-hard/rest-deeply cycle, which considered-reasoning requires…

& Microsoft is only 1 single example of progressing-through-sociopathy-into-psychopathy among our countless corporate world-possessors.

    DarkHexad dimensions of human-evil:

    Narcissism / Machiavellianism / Sociopathy-Psychopathy / Nihilism / Sadism / Systemic-Dishonesty.

Can you see how the more one immerses oneself in DarkHexad as a means of “winning”, the more one’s frame-of-reference normalizes that all?

It’s just “drift”, but in frame-of-reference, is all…

Cloying propaganda, of either right or left, is cloying propaganda.

I can’t imagine finding such to be “food” for my mind.

I happen to wish that Trump wasn’t going to be “king” of the US, but the making-believing ( instead of objective-practicality ) on both sides is making it inevitable.

You could make a cloying-propaganda video about the Biden-institution’s cruising on its inertia/“entitlement”, while it destroys the young generation’s capacity to stomach voting for it, too, couldn’t you?

    Sanders is right:

that Biden’s backing of the genociding of Palestinians is his “Vietnam”.

He only needs to lose a slender few percent, and he’s committed to doing it, at any cost.

    “strategy”, right?

I still believe the economic house-of-cards is going to gut Biden’s chance in the 2024 election, but there are only months left for that to happen, so maybe I’ll be proved-wrong on that belief.

( BTW, the party-system, which both Republicans & Democrats are examples of,

is, itself, institutional highjacking of countries, and should never have been permitted to own ANY countries.

No matter which party it is that gains owning of a country, they’re in it for their party’s national dominion, not for the country.

    That conflict-of-interest means it isn’t possible for a party-system to be not-corrupt.

    Anywhere.

Notice that in the actual ancient Democracy, citizens vote on the individual issues, and Switzerland is the only country in the modern world that is somewhat close to that.

    Who’d tolerate the responsiblity, though?

Isn’t having some political-party own the country “easier” or “better” than having to act as a citizen in a democracy, & vote on all sorts of individual things?

Chickens are coming home to roost, throughout the countries of the world, these days, fersure… )

  • the healthiest alarm-clock I know-of is simply to have 2 lamps on wall-plug timers, such that the warm-white one comes on 1st, then say 5mins later, the daylight one comes on.

Given how the beginning of sunshine changes through the year, you have to change these timers every couple of weeks, or 1/2-month, but that’s a small price to pay for quiet, biochemistry-altering waking up that actually works properly.

Not an app, but it is an alarm-clock, and it wakes one up well, using the very skin-light-sensing system we are evolved to be using, instead of using some noisemaker, as “normal” alarm-clocks do.

  • AndroOffice, or whatever it’s called, is a port of LibreOffice to Android.

It’s a little cumbersome ( use it on a big tablet, not on a little phone ), but it’s got the capability that nothing-else has.

I agree with people who hate the UI, on mobile the desktop UI’s … not a wise choice…

… but if you’re using a bluetooth keyboard, it’s much better.

    https://play.google.com/store/search?q=androoffice&c=apps

If you want real spreadsheets, it seems the best option around.

I’m presuming its Word equivalency is similar.

I’ve tried multiple alternatives for spreadsheets, & for me, nothing else came close.

Now, however, I think that using Julia programming, instead of spreadsheets, would make everything in the whole world work better.
