    Mammoth Monday

    • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Papa Eld with Declaration Grooming B3 knot
    • Razor: Böker S.S. Paris Wins
    • Lather: Summer Break Soaps Valedictorian
    • Aftershave: House of Mammoth Shire
    • Fragrance: Zoologist Snowy Owl

I had used this scent combo before and Snowy Owl can’t keep up with the tobacco deliciousness of the Shire and Valedictorian, its warm florals will still be here after the soap and splash have long faded.

    • Brush: Wild West Brushworks Deep Pearl 26mm Sweet Spot Badger

    • Razor: Frederick Reynolds “The Celebrated” 4/8 Hollow Ground

    • Lather: E&S Rasage - Azur - Soap

    • Post Shave: E&S Rasage - Azur - Aftershave

    • Post Shave: Thayers - Rose - Toner

    • Talc: Pinaud Clubman

Wonderful aquatic scent. There’s nothing like going to a beach on the Mediterranean Sea on a beautiful crisp fall morning in Maryland. The little Reynolds 4/8 is a sports car. Great shave that merited a thin cloud of talc.

How’s the soap base? E&S are on my list of French soap makers I want to try one day (as soon as I’ve killed a tub - whenever that may be)

The soap base is just fine. Very easy to lather and pretty slick. Zero issues for me. It is not distinctive in the way that bases from Zingari, Wholly Kaw, or BaM are, but that doesn’t make it worse. I think it just does not have the same emphasis on skin food and post-shave feel.

Nice find! I like those old Sheffield razors with the barber’s notch. A great design feature

Yeah, it’s a cool little razor. Ivory scales. I bought this off the 'zaar back in March. It is in terrific shape and took a great edge.

    • Brush: Maggard 24mm Synthetic
    • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 2 SB
    • Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (3)
    • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Varen - Soap
    • Post Shave: Stirling - Bergamot Lavender - Witch Hazel & Aloe
    • Post Shave: House of Mammoth/Declaration Grooming - Cerberus - Liniment

Varen is great, as is the sheep base.

Someone was asking me about the Era, because there’s one available for sale with a Level 1 and 2 plate. I used the 2 plate today so I could give this person some up-to-date thoughts on it. I like the 2 plate, but I wouldn’t want it to be my only Era plate. I prefer the 3 which is hard to come by.

    • Preshave: Proraso Green Preshave
    • Brush: Zenith 506U XS Horse 🐎
    • Razor: Koraat 14.2 Straight Razor
    • Lather: Southern Witchcraft Autumn Ash
    • Post Shave: Floid The Genuine
    • Post Shave: Nivea After Shave Balm

Second try with the Koraat - I still get a slight burn (even though I managed not to get any weepers). I’ll try again tomorrow. In any case, it’s a razor I enjoy using!

    Have a good evening!

Oh, are you sure? Ignore what’s below if you like modern GEM designs

          ::: spoiler
Modern GEM razors tend to be technically inferior to vintage ones. Just three-piece DE designs mistranslated to the GEM form factor. The genius of GEM razors was that there are two degrees of freedom in the mechanism: one that clamps the blade (like for DE, injector, AC, and AS blades), and one that pushes the edge against the blade stops. That way, the gap and exposure are always exactly reproducible, regardless of manufacturing tolerances of the blade manufacturer. All modern designs I’ve seen throw that overboard and make expensive interior razors. And even worse those squared off threaded posts on some are a recipe for stripped threads. Rant over 😅

    SOTD 13.11.2023

    • Prep: face wash
    • Razor: Stando Perun
    • Blade: Voskhod
    • Brush: CoolDog Leipzig 26 mm Fan
    • Lather: A&E - Ouddiction
    • Post Shave: WestMan - MazaGran ASB

1-pass face shave, going with a gourmand combo again. Ouddiction with its sweet honey notes worked out very fine with the sweet coffee cocktail of MazaGran. Definitely something more suited for a relaxed weekend shave than a Monday SOTN where it’s rainy and windy…

    Mammoth Monday Part Deux

    • Brush: Dogwood Handcrafts Papa Eld with Declaration Grooming B3 knot
    • Razor: Böker S.S. Paris Wins
    • Lather: CBL Lavender & Leather
    • Aftershave: House of Mammoth Almond Leather

This concludes my drill press-themed series of shaves with the rescaled Böker. I’ve really enjoyed this fine razor and the scent combos I’ve tried over the last seven shaves. The B3 brush is also a pure pleasure to use.

CBL Lavender & Leather is not a subtle scent, just a massive punch of leather with sharp, aromatic lavender, but pairing it with Almond Leather was a good idea. Its sweetness rounds out the combined scent.

I think you’re the only one I’ve seen here, or on r/Wetshaving, who has used a CBL soap. Do you like it?

Sad to see the drill press series go but I understand the need to move on :)

It’s ok. The base is fine, and the scents are strong. Nothing that swept me off my feet, but no real complaints either. I do not recommend it, at least not until you run out of stuff to try from the better artisans 😄
