I had a difficult time getting the soap to come together today. This is highly unusual for the SBS base. I did manage a few passes with a slurry-like lather. Not a terrible shave, but not what I was expecting.
Rating: 4/5
Those handles look beautiful.

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.
Except for the brush, this is the same setup that I used yesterday. Another great shave.
I approach straight razor shaving in the same way I approach meditation; as an opportunity to be mindful. Both activities involve technique that changes over time, and where mastery is unimportant. It’s just a practice. Of course you can think about shaving this way regardless of what gear you use, but if you are a wetshaving hobbyist and appreciate the technique of manipulating an edge in addition to other aspects, you should get into straight razor shaving.
Enjoy your weekend!

- Brush: AP Shave Co. - 24mm Synbad Fan
- Razor: Gillette Tech (Z-4)
- Blade: Personna 74 (37)
- Lather: Barrister & Mann - Leviathan - Soap
- Post Shave: Spearhead - Seaforth! Heather - Toner
- Post Shave: Kool - Get Noticed - Gel
I like the shaves that I get from the P74. I paid less than “market price” for these, but even still… according to my spreadsheet which takes into account cost, closeness, and comfort – I’d need to get 60 shaves to make them cost effective. Surely it’s possible that they last me 60 shaves, and maybe we’ll find out, but even then they just break even compared to Personna Med Prep, and I’d need 160 shaves to be a tie with Personna Lab Blue.
That being said, 60 good shaves would still be in the realm of acceptable value.
How many shaves do you typically get on a DE blade before binning it?
Leviathan++;
Between 4 and 10 depending on the brand.
Ok. That’s my experience too.
Fufluns
- Brush: Zenith 506U N (50/50 horse mane/tail)
- Razor: Böker Abalone
- Lather: Abbate y La Mantia – Fufluns
- Post Shave: Sir – Irisch Moos
- Fragrance: Sir – Irisch Moos
Fufluns and Sir Irisch Moos are quite different, but both scents are based on Tonka bean, so the Etruscan god of Fertility and the German Spanish Fly don’t only fit together thematically.

A last minute decision to go with Deep Blue Sea today, but I think I made the right choice. A very “refreshing” scent.
