    Dec. 14, 2023

    • Brush: Yaqi 26mm Synthetic
    • Razor: Karve Overlander
    • Blade: Tatara
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Vert Noir - Soap
    • Post Shave: Chiseled Face - Vert Noir - Aftershave

Good shave. This scent is still very out there for me but I like it more today. The aftershave seems to have way more noir than vert off the start but dries down and smells ok. It has almost a camp fire type scent at times reminds me of those black crackle cigarettes.

I also used Chiseled Face today, Midnight Stag. And while I was using it I was thinking how I should really get a new CF tub soon. Your description of Vert Noir is intriguing, that might be my next tub from them.

I have a sample of Vert Noir and I agree that it’s “out there”. It almost reminds me of fish food, but in a good way.

    Micromatic 5/7: KILL Vespers

    • Brush: Boti Motherlode knot in laminated wooden handle, 30mm
    • Razor: GEM Micromatic Flying Wing (NOS, chrome plated)
    • Blade: Personna GEM PTFE (1)
    • Lather: Barrister and Mann Vespers
    • Aftershave: Pitralon Swiss version
    • Fragrance: Sir Irisch Moos

Best I can do to be on theme is kill a sample. I enjoy the comforting scent of Vespers every time I use it. But since I’ve instituted my one-tub-out-for-one-tub-in policy, I’ve killed a grand total of zero tubs, and it takes all my restraint not to go buy a set of Vespers.

I’m using a Flying Wing/Bullet Tip today, the fifth and final generation of the Micromatic line of GEM razors, and probably the prettiest vintage safety razor with the possible exception of the Streamline. This razor is a tad milder than the MMOC and Clog-Pruf, but still plenty efficient.

Your “theme” comment reminded me that I completely forgot about Theme Thursday over at reddit. It’s been a while. I do kinda miss the community over there and I’m thinking of going back.

I do both, personally. I hate Reddit, but not the community. The community here is still tiny, but I like interacting with everyone here, too.

I hear you. I started scrolling Reddit again recently and it just doesn’t have the appeal that it once did.

Listen… I’m not here to help – You need a set of Vespers. If someone made me have only 5 soaps, Vespers would be on the list.

      I’ve instituted my one-tub-out-for-one-tub-in policy

This was my policy for the past year. It only proved to me that I have no discipline. My soap collection continues to grow.

and it takes all my restraint not to go buy a set of Vespers A difficult task indeed!

        I have no discipline

I’m also struggling in that department😅. Just today, I got an unsanctioned tub of Stirling’s new Baccarat Rouge dupe soap🤫

I am thinking about a BBS Feb. or Mar. to help me rationalize the ridiculous size of my collection. :)

Do you have the Baccarat Rouge fragrance? I’ve read that it is a sweet scent that is polarizing.

My wife does, it’s one of her favourites. I mainly got the dupe set as a suprise for her.

You’re right that it’s sweet-leaning. It’s a warm amber fragrance and I quite enjoy it

    • Prep: hot shower
    • Brush: Yaqi 24mm Naples Tuxedo Knot (synthetic)
    • Razor: Gillette Ball-end Tech K4 (1965)
    • Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (3)
    • Lather: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag - Shaving Soap
    • Post Shave: Chiseled Face - Midnight Stag - Aftershave Balm

Using Stag is such an interesting experience for my sensitive skin. There’s a slight burn from the soap, but not too bad. The balm though, it gives me a pretty intense burn when first applied. But as it’s burning I can still somehow feel it moisturizing me at the same time. Then after a minute or two the burn is gone and I’m left feeling soothed and moisturized, having emerged from the fire not only unscathed but somehow restored.

I don’t have the balm, but the after shave is the most moisturizing I have (it’s also the only artisan after shave I have, so this may be a low bar to clear).

As to stinging, if it’s fragrance burn, bowl lathering could help.

Interesting. What is it about bowl lathering that would change it? The Stag soap burn is really never too bad for me, but I have noticed that the severity of it does seem to change from shave to shave. Today for example was a very mild burn. Maybe my lathering process was a little different today (I took my time with it today), making it more similar to using a bowl?

If you face lather, you scrub the soap with the bristles against your skin much more than if you build the lather in a bowlqnd then only apply it on your face. At least for me, I noticed a clear difference.

Ah, that totally makes sense. I generally prefer face lathering but might give that a try. I have a scuttle I haven’t used in forever, this might be a good time to use it, especially now that the weather is cold.

2 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

Off theme. There’s nothing I have that is even close to finishing.

BBS November pushed my enjoyment of the variety of soaps and scents that I have. It was nice to spend time with the King today.

There’s no such thing as “too full to finish”; there’s only too small brushes.
