I put my razors back on the (synthetic) stones, and this time I seem to have gotten it right – even the Koraat, for which I was most unsure.
Have a good Sunday!
The Koraat steel is high hardness and takes a bit longer to take an edge. But, the steel can support a very refined edge.
My principal issue is the smile - I much prefer honing straight straight razor, and I find it so much more complicated.
Edit: Thank you for your last video, which was not only very instructive, but contained also glamour shots of your TI.
Since most knives are curved, knife sharpeners thinking nothing about it. But, it does take a while to become comfortable with curvy shapes. I did a video on honing a smiling razor, but I don’t think it was very informative. My Koraat 7/8 has a good smile to it, but it was honed in November and that damn steel never gives up an edge ;-). I’ll do another smiling edge video if I get a good example. Perhaps @whosgotthepudding can help me find one.
Thank you for watching the video. I hope there was something useful in there for you. The abalone scales on the TI are much more interesting IRL because they change as the light moves. The 7/8 full hollow from TI is excellent. My other TIs are 6/8. I noticed the difference immediately.
I’m at the stage where I dislike honing smiling razors, but I feel I’m not doing to bad (also thanks to you and your videos!)
Your videos are always helpful, and I like your “rambling” style – because some things simply cannot be shown while doing (for instance, where you put what kind of pressure). Carry on with your good work!
Shave and a Haircut - Two Bits
- Brush: Zenith B8 (XL aluminium handle, 28 mm × 57 mm boar)
- Razor: Weck Hair - Shaper (blue translucent scales)
- Blade: Kismet - Rostfrei, Polymer beschichtet
- Lather: Catie’s Bubbles - Tonsorial Parlour
- Post Shave: Noble Otter - Barrbarr
- Fragrance: Spearhead Shaving Company - Seaforth! Fleur de France
Quiz: Ouch! I got 10/32, and there are several that I realised I should have gotten once reveiled. Oh well.
My barber is closed on Sundays, so I had a preparatory haircut there yesterday. The Weck is a great little razor for realigning the sideburns.
Theme, and post & frag relevance: Three barbershops.
A word about today’s sponsor: SBS is the maker of two of my favourite scents in wetshaving; Valedictorian and Teacher’s Pet and I’m looking forward to trying more of them.

- Brush: Elite Razor Neo-resinate 26mm Mother Lode
- Razor: EldrormR Industries MM24
- Blade: Personna Gem PTFE (3)
- Lather: Zingari Man - The Master - Soap
- Post Shave: Zingari Man - The Master - Aftershave
- Post Shave: Thayers - Rose - Toner
- Fragrance: Floris of London - Jermyn Street - Eau de Toilette
- Talc: Yardley Gold
The description of this scent is that it is a a dark and spicy take on a barbershop scent; the Master referring to a master barber. I quite like this scent and really need to use it more. Jermyn Street is a lemon/citrus/green sort of scent. The kind of thing you would expect from a barbershop imo. Wonderful shave today!
Great photo!
