Had to take it easy as a consequence of yesterday’s less than optimal shave. Was also in a bit of a hurry, as I opted to hit the snooze button this morning 😀.
2 passes and good enough for work. Cologne Russe is so good. It has really grown on me over the past few years.
Cologne russe has a really interesting description. It’s been on my to try list for years by now

Enjoy the glory, and that beautiful Tanifuji!
After dousing myself with aftershave and EdT, I remembered I have a doctor’s appointment midday today. That should be interesting. At least I didn’t use Midnight Stag :)
How did the doctor deal with the stank?
There were no comments one way or the other. I think that’s a good outcome.
A testimony to the great professionalism of your doctor 😂
Agree. Either that, or their noses are already conditioned to much stronger and far worse odors :)
Bold and glorious choice that I fully support.
Case in point: I’m currently traveling to a conference, and here’s the full list of software I’ve packed

I think the EdT is so good it overcomes the polarizing aspect of the soap’s scent. I’ll be on a short trip starting Friday. Not sure what I’ll take yet. Certainly the #GloriousStankTrinity is an option.
Did you get a bottle of 3 Scots?
No. An alternative to the Black Watch EdT didn’t strike my fancy. I can’t imagine that the BW EdT can be improved upon.
My thoughts went exactly the other way: Black Watch is wonderful, and 3 Scots was the result the same perfumer working in response to the same prompt, it must be great, too 😂
But that doesn’t help with your Friday Frag Finding Fix
The poor Belgians! What have they done to you to deserve this 🤣
I swear I smelled Tabac at Bruxelles-Midi, so I conclude that Belgians are a cultured bunch, and I immediately felt welcomed 😊
Unlike in Paris, which displayed a disturbing lack of Tabac today 😕
Recently, I keep running into people wearing Terre d’Hermès here (or maybe Stirling Arkadia? 🤔)
Oh, that’s nice, too!

Yup, it’s been too long since my last trip there, and I’m looking forward (mostly to the food and beers) 😊
Currently speeding through France in the TGV and looking up restaurants near my hotel.

I’m confused: yesterday, I took a sharpie, an Aroma 600, a Proyan 1k and a cherry tomato and sharpened the razor again. I checked the stone, and raised a slurry. The sharpie went away almost instantly, the stone was completely flat, but for the love of god, I couldn’t get the razor to cut the tomato. I tried and tried, but nothing. After 45 minutes, I was annoyed and simply passed on the Shapton 12k. Fuck honing! Today I stropped with green paste, and then on to clean leather. My expectations were lownto non existent, and I tried to shave more to see what it would be like.
Turns out that this razor is plenty sharp, slicing into my ear without any effort 🩸🩸. The shave was very comfortable, with a nice face feel, though I cut myself twice.
Lessons learned:
- I have absolutely no idea when I have honed enough, nor what I’m doing. Somehow, it still worked out this time. I probably have to trust the sharpie more than anything else.
- I should try to get somebody to analyze the structure of the tomato skin, and make protective gear out of it, or synthesize the structure.
Have a good evening!

Yayyy! Excellent news!

I’m not clear whether you moved to the 12k after 45 minutes or skipped it
I used it for 20-30 passes
Huh. Interesting.
I wonder whether 1k is too coarse?
@gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social, do you have an idea?
It’s really too difficult for me to assess what’s happening based on the description. @PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social, are you using a 25x-40x loupe to inspect the edge?
I did a quick check online and found that a Proyan 1K is approximately equivalent to a 500 grit Japanese stone. That’s too coarse for anything other spine correction, if true. Can you provide more specs on the Proyan stones you have?
Did you test with the tomato after your 20-30 passes on the 12K or just after the 1K?
Also, is this a Japanese Parker? I don’t get an image when I follow the link in the SOTD.
Edit: I did a little searching. Are you using the glass-bottomed Proyan stones? I do see that they attempt to mimic the Shapton Glass stones. Their 1K stone is 9 micron which would make it a little finer (not coarser) than a Shapton Glass 1K.
I don’t have a loupe or a microscope, so I can only inspect with my mark 1 eyeballs.
I have the Proyan 1k glass stone, which should have a 9.1 micron grit (at least, that’s what is written on it.
The Parker is a US made Parker straight razor. I tried to cut the tomato during honing with the 1k stone; afterwards, I stopped trying.

OK. That’s what I found, and I also watched a video review of the Proyan stones which, as you’ve stated, were very positive.
I don’t have a loupe or a microscope
You don’t need a microscope but an inexpensive loupe would be very helpful. They are a pain to use until you get the hang of them.

The only Parker razors I can find that aren’t Japanese are replaceable blade shavettes. Is your razor new? Vintage? What’s the width and grind?
I tried to cut the tomato during honing with the 1k stone; afterwards, I stopped trying.
Frustration is your enemy when sharpening. I learned this the hard way many years ago. Since the razor is shaving well now, I suggest you test it with your tomato to see how “shaving sharp” performs. For technique in testing sharpness with a tomato you can watch any of DrMatt357’s YouTube sharpening videos. [I don’t suggest that you try to emulate his sharpening technique. He’s very fast and efficient because he has the experience of having sharpened many razors.]
Here is the Parker straight:
I bought it used on ebay, and they stopped producing them. If I 'm correctly informed, this is the same company as the one producing the shavettes. The grind is full hollow.
I will check Dr. Matt. What kind of loupe do you use or would you recommend?
